Colin Farrell Talks Batman Spinoff Series ‘The Penguin’

The Batman was the newest iteration of Bruce Wayne from the 2022 Matt Reeves film. The movie brought new and iconic iterations of famous Batman characters like The Riddler and Penguin. One of these new takes on a classic character has proven popular enough to warrant its own spinoff. That’s why HBO Max will soon have its own series based on Colin Farrell’s take on The Penguin. There haven’t been many public details to come out about the show thus far. Yet, while doing press for his new movie The Banshees Of Insherin, Colin Farrell has been speaking a bit about his upcoming villainous role reprisal.
The Penguin Is Coming
The Penguin got its announcement very shortly after the rapid success of The Batman in early 2022. Director Matt Reeves said in an interview with Collider that the events of The Penguin will take place in between The Batman and that movie’s sequel which is set to arrive in 2025.
As far as the star of the show, Colin Farrell has some exciting things to say about taking the spotlight as Penguin.
“The Penguin show is dark. But I’ve just got such license to explore in it. And such a freedom beneath the makeup,” Farrell said during an interview with GoldDerby for The Banshees Of Insherin.
Colin also mentions that he’s read many of the series’ scripts and that they’re “extraordinary.” Farrell’s portrayal of Penguin received a lot of praise despite him being just a minor antagonist in the film. Many were noting Farrell looking like a completely different person beneath the layers of makeup for the character. The show is set to explore Penguin as he rises through the ranks of Gotham’s criminal underground.
Matt Reeves will be an executive producer on the show, and the showrunner is Lauren LeFranc, known for her previous work on the Marvel show Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Very few other details about the show have come out yet. However, certain things should begin to trickle out over the course of this year.
The New Batman
It seems as though the newest Batman film was just the beginning of something much bigger. Director Matt Reeves has spoken about the fact that HBO has plans for multiple series based on characters from the first movie. The first of which is Catwoman, the character portrayed by Zoe Kravitz in the movie. The second is a show centering around the Gotham City Police Department. So, The Batman was just the beginning. Plus, if The Penguin is just as good, we could be seeing the beginning of a new, dark superhero world to compete with the MCU.
The Penguin is coming to HBO Max sometime soon, although it is currently without any release date or release window.
