Yes, fans of The Batman will have to wait a while before they see a second installment. However, production has announced official filming dates for The Penguin spin-off series. Colin Farrell will reprise his role as Gotham City’s villain, the Penguin. Here is what Batman fans and comic book enthusiasts can expect from the series, plus when it will be available to stream.

Warner Bros. Scraps Superhero Projects

For DC comics fans, Warner Brothers haven’t been particularly nice recently. There have been a number of cancelations as a result of the Warner Bros. Discovery merger.

As of right now, Warner Bros. has yet to confirm filming for The Batman 2, which is surprising to some fans. WB has also canceled several HBO Max shows. They have also completely scrapped the nearly-finished Batgirl movie without releasing it. Other canceled titles include Strange Adventures and The Wonder Twins film. It is possible other shows and movies might get shelved due to the merger as well.

Many people have been wondering what the recent cancelations might mean for The Penguin series that was announced in March. The show has been in the development phase since the end of 2021, seemingly in limbo like many other DC projects.

Despite all of the cancelations and production halts, there is no sign of Warner Brothers backing off of The Penguin spin-off. In fact, they have announced a start date for filming for next year.

The Penguin Production Scheduled To Kick Off

According to Production Weeklyproduction for the series is slated to begin on February 6, 2023. Filming is expected to take place in New York and is produced by Matt Reeves, Lauren LeFranc, and Dylan Clark.

In addition to playing the role of Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot, Farrell will also have a hand in the production of the series too. Farrell first made his appearance as The Penguin in 2022’s The Batman. He has since been praised for his performance in the role.

“It’s just that it’s kind of an amazing character to explore, his kind of awkwardness, and his strength, and his villainy, yes, his propensity for violence. But there’s also a heartbroken man inside there you know, which just makes it really tasty,” Farrell said about the character.

The end of the movie set Cobblepot up to take over the world of crime in Gotham City. However, it isn’t yet clear whether the events of the show will take place before or after what was shown in The Batman.

The Penguin isn’t the only comic-based series coming to HBO Max. A Green Lantern series has also been greenlit by the production company. At this time, neither of the series has a confirmed official release date.
