‘Minions’ Fans Getting Huge Treat From Netflix

Minions Rise of Gru

Netflix made a deal with Universal Pictures, giving them the first window of all Universal’s animated movies. This means that Minions: The Rise of Gru will go to Netflix before it streams anywhere else.

However, that won’t be here until later in 2022, or possibly early in 2023, and Netflix has something even better coming for fans of Illumination Studios’ Minions franchise.

Netflix bringing several Minions projects to fans

Minions: The Rise of Gru hit in 2022 as a prequel to the Despicable Me franchise. This movie follows up the Minions movie that showed where the little yellow trouble makers came from and how they ended up hooking up with Gru. The new movie showed what happened immediately after they moved in with the 11-year-old Gru. This was their first actual adventure together, where they helped him beat the Vicious 6 and save his hero, the evil Wild Knuckles, who they betrayed.

The movie was hugely successful, and it is the first Universal animated movie that will hit Netflix first. It should arrive around December, in time for the holidays. Some other Minions-related projects hit Netflix first. While there are place card holders that have the date of January 1, 2023, What’s On Netflix has sources revealing they will arrive sooner than that.

What are the new Minions projects on Netflix?

These new releases will include the previous movie, Minions, hitting Netflix. However, the surprise is some other Minions animated efforts are hitting the streaming giant as well. The first is called Minions & More 1 and it includes a collection of Minions shorts, including “Training Wheels,” “Puppy,” and “Yellow Is the New Black.” The second is called Minions & More 2, and it includes more shorts, including “Phil’s Dance Party” and “Binky Nelson Unpacified.” It appears there will be more and these are just a sample of the titles.

A sample of the voice cast for these shorts are Reese Witherspoon, John C. Reilly, Allison Janney, Patton Oswalt, Tara Strong, Danny DeVito, Ed Helms, Miranda Cosgrove, and many more, so this is a strong lineup. These are likely some Minions shorts from the previous Blu-ray releases. The Minion movie itself included the shorts “CroMinion,” “Competition,” and “Binky Nelson Unpacified.” However, there is also a chance that some of the shorts could be previously unreleased movies.

The Minions‘ future is bright

The future of the Minions and Gru is bright when it comes to Illumination and Universal Animation. The movie has earned $346 million domestically since its release seven weeks ago. This puts it fifth for the year behind The Batman, which it could still surpass if it remains strong over the next few weeks.

Worldwide, it is doing even better. The movie ranks in fourth place ahead of The Batman at $796 million. It just opened in China as the most successful animated movie there since the start of the pandemic, earning a $3.2 million weekend. Minions fans will surely get more of Gru and the little yellow guys over the next few years.
