‘John Wick’ Writer Joins ‘My Hero Academia’ Live-Action Movie

Netflix’s My Hero Academia live-action movie adaptation has a new name added to the crew. Ace writer Joby Harold, who is popular for his work as a screenwriter in John Wick: Chapter 3- Parabellum is now a part of the live-action movie.  The movie was announced in August 2021 with Shinsuke Sato as the director alongside Jay Ashenfelter and Alex Garcia supervising the adaptation. Will My Hero Academia Live-Action Movie Be A Success?

After Death Note’s live-action adaptation, the streamer is now working on One Piece and My Hero Academia as well. Both these anime and manga franchises have been big commercial hits for Netflix and even inspired several anime movies and video games through the years. Although fans fear that live-action adaptations do not turn out to be big successes like the manga or anime versions, Netflix has been roping in big names to ensure these titles work out.

While One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda is overseeing its live-action adaptation, My Hero Academia now has Harold to screenwrite the adaptation to perfection. The writer has also worked on other popular movies and TV series like:

  • Obi-Wan Kenobi
  • Spinning Out
  • Robin Hood
  • Underground
  • Edge Of Tomorrow
  • My Blind Brother
  • King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword

He is also working on upcoming movies Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts (2023) and The Flash (2023). My Hero Academia is Harold’s latest team-up with the production house after the live-action adaptation of Godzilla for Apple TV.

My Hero Academia Live-Action Was Announced In 2021

Back in 2018, Netflix announced that it has partnered with Legendary Entertainment to produce a Live-Action anime adaptation. However, the official announcement came later in 2021. Based on the award-winning manga series of the same name, there is no confirmation on which volume the live-action movie will adapt from.

As per Variety, the upcoming movie will be available to stream on Netflix upon completion. However, in Japan, the movie will be distributed by Toho Co. Ltd. My Hero Academia manga series was first published on Weekly Shonen Jump starting July 2014 with a total of 36 volumes to date.

My Hero Academia Anime Series Is Currently On Crunchyroll

On the other hand, the anime series landed on Animax and Adult Swim (Toonami) on April 3, 2016, and is currently in its sixth season. The anime series is also available to stream on Crunchyroll with a total of 124 episodes and 8 OVAs.

My Hero Academia manga and anime have both received several awards including the Harvey Award for Best Manga and Sugoi Japan Award. It also received two nominations at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards for Anime of the Year.
