BBC’s Doctor Who released a new teaser marking the debut of Ncuti Gatwa as the titular character. However, the returning showrunner Russel T. Davies revealed that the teaser was edited to conceal a big spoiler from fans. The latest teaser saw the 30-year-old introduced as the 15th Doctor. It also marked David Tennant’s return to the series. So, what was this spoiler about? Keep reading to find out the details!
New Doctor Who Teaser Has An Edited Background
Davies talked about the edit in an interview with Doctor Who Magazine. As per CBR.com, the teaser trailer featured the Rwandan-Scottish actor against a background featuring stormy skies. However, Davies revealed that the background was edited specifically in the clip to avoid revealing the real location to fans. He confirmed, “You’ll never see that again. Because the actual location would give away too much!”
The teaser shows Gatwa shouting, “What the hell is going on here?” This could be him questioning why he is stuck in the Edge, while Tennant’s 14th Doctor is taking place.
David Tennant’s Return Attracted Viewers’ Criticism
The latest Doctor Who series marks the start of a new era for LGBTQIA+ representation with Gatwa’s Doctor being gay with his transgender companion Rose (Yasmin Finney). These new changes came into effect after some fans felt that the 13th Doctor’s romance with companion Yasmin had an underwhelming conclusion. Despite this, the show maker’s decision to have Jodie Whittaker regenerate into Tennant has attracted viewers’ criticism.
Davies worked on the iconic British science fiction series from 2005 to 2010 marking the show’s return after a 15-year-long hiatus. This cemented the timelord as a 21st-century cultural icon. Ever since the show was helmed by Stephen Moffat and recently by Chris Chibnall. Additionally, Davies’ re-entry to the show marks the return of familiar faces including Tennant reprising his role as the Doctor. Moreover, Catherine Tate’s character Donna Noble will also return to the show continuing as the wisecracking companion.
Neil Patrick Harris Will Star In An Undisclosed Role
How I Met Your Mother alum Neil Patrick Harris will also star in the upcoming episode as a villain whose identity is kept under wraps. Talking about his appearance on the BBC series, Neil stated, “I was just in London filming an episode special for Doctor Who where I play someone I’m not allowed to talk about. And I had to have a posh British accent… Or did I?”.
David Tennant’s Doctor Who Season 14 is expected to premiere in November 2023. This marks the end of Jodie Whittaker’s character as the 13th Doctor. Ncuti’s first episode as the lead will air in 2023 during the festive period.
