Doctor Who introduced its new Doctor recently, with Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa taking on the role of the titular Doctor. Now, the news broke on who the show cast to play his companion for Season 14.

When Doctor Who announced Gatwa would take on the role of the Doctor, it was a landmark moment. Following Jodie Whittaker becoming the first woman to play the role, Gatwa will be the first Black man to take on the iconic sci-fi role. That led to questions about other casting news. After that, it resulted in Millie Gibson taking on the role of the companion.

With Doctor Who as a British series, it was easy to see the show choosing a British actress for the new role. Most fans know Gibson from her role as Kellie Neelan on Coronation Street. Moreover, she has also appeared in other British shows like Butterfly and Love, Lies and Records. In a statement, Gibson said she was beyond honored to join the cast and called it a gift and a dream role. “I will do everything to try and fill the boots the fellow companions have traveled in before me,” she concluded.

She joins Gatwa in the cast. Ncuti Gatwa made his name in America, thanks to his role in Sex Education, which was an enormous hit on Netflix. The Scottish actor played Eric Effiong, the gay best friend of Asa Butterfield’s Otis. He ended up winning several BAFTA Awards for his role from 2020 to 2022.

Millie Gibson is an English actress who grew up in Greater Manchester. While only 18, Millie has received critical acclaim for her work. She won the Best Young Actor Award at the 2022 British Soap Awards for her role on Coronation Street. More so, she was a series regular on the show, debuting in 2019 at only 15.

On the soap, she played Kelly Nelson, the daughter of Rick Neelan (Greg Wood). While she was only supposed to be a multi-episode run, she impressed the producers and ended up as a series regular by 2020. She had several big moments in the series, including a murder conviction, the death of her mother, and a kidnapping storyline. Gibson quit the soap in August 2022, wanting to move on to other things. Ultimately, that led to her role in Doctor Who.

Finally, Millie Gibson is the 95th actor to play a Doctor Who companion. The most notable was Karen Gillan, who was a companion to the 11th Doctor and went on to play Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy.
