American Idol is currently taping its auditions round for Season 21. News has leaked about the process, with some who went home early explaining what it was like. There has also been at least one competitor from last year who is returning and cameras at a concert with some of last season’s finalists.

However, it will still be a wait before the show hits the air, as the show tapes several rounds before the live shows start, and there is still a lot of time to go before things are ready to roll on ABC. Here is when you will see American Idol return to the small screen for its new season.

American Idol Season 21 release date

As aforementioned, the new season of American Idol already started taping. This is the auditions rounds, and it is the return of an older format. This is the Idol Across America virtual search. However, after that, some of these competitors received a VIP spot to try out live. The virtual rounds stretched out from August 3 until September 14.

The judges then showed up for three locations where the people who made it through the virtual auditions sang live and earn their way to Hollywood. That is what just happened. The live auditions this year took place in Las Vegas, Nashville, and New Orleans. It is here that the singers got a chance to make it to Hollywood. Don’t expect to hear about who made it because the people moving on to that round had to sign a non-disclosure agreement.

Soon, American Idol will tape Hollywood Week and the Showcase Round. That is when things will go live. But when will the show return to the air? The pre-taped audition rounds will start airing on Sunday, February 19, 2023.

What to expect from the new season of American Idol

The new season of American Idol won’t change much from what fans are used to. Ryan Seacrest is back as the host, as he has been since the show started airing 21 seasons ago. The three judges are also the same. Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie will be back to help the next Idol hopefuls make the next step to superstardom.

There will also be at least one familiar face competing this season. Haley Slaton Myles auditioned last season while pregnant and made it to Hollywood. However, she was about ready to give birth when those rounds took place and the judges sent her home, with Katy Perry admitting that the pregnancy wouldn’t allow Haley to hit the notes she otherwise could. They asked her to return, and she will be back this season to give it another try.
