Does the Bringing Up Bates family celebrate Christmas? As the holiday season kicks off, fans are beginning to wonder what the Bates family does on December 25. As you may know, they don’t celebrate every holiday.
They choose to opt out of certain ones or celebrate them with other traditions. As we previously reported, Gil and Kelly Jo Bates have been open about not celebrating Halloween. Instead, they simply partake in fall activities throughout the season. Though Gil and Kelly Jo don’t like Halloween, it looks like some of their adult children celebrate with their own families.
They also celebrate “I Love You Day” instead of Valentine’s Day. The family goes all out with a themed costume party and contest.

As Christians, the Bates family members celebrate Jesus’ birth, but do they buy presents and participate in other traditions? On Reddit, Bates fans and critics are discussing how the family celebrates different holidays.
In a now-deleted blog comment from 2011, Kelly Jo explained to a fan that they “try to focus on Christ in the holidays.” She added, “We don’t celebrate as most Americans do with Santa and such, because we feel it would distract from our real goal of having Christ a our focus.”
So, the Bringing Up Bates stars use the holiday season to remember Jesus’ birth rather than worrying about presents and Santa.
Some fans speculate this was due to financial reasons. Gil and Kelly Jo may not have had the means to buy gifts for all 19 of their kids.
In another Reddit thread, a fan shared more insight from another deleted blog comment. In this comment, Kelly Jo explained that they discovered that their kids were “losing some of the sentiments of Christ during the season.” So, they exchange gifts at other times of the year.
Unfortunately, fans don’t get a good look into Gil and Kelly Jo’s lives these days. Other Bringing Up Bates stars are active on YouTube and social media. So, fans have been able to see them celebrate. Several of the adult kids have gone all out with matching pajamas and lots of presents. But it’s unclear whether Gil and Kelly Jo celebrate with their youngest kids anymore.
