Today November 2022 Walking Challenge

Occasionally, the hosts of Today get out of the studio for their segments. Al Roker joined correspondent Stephanie Mansour at Universal Orlando to kick off the start of the Today November walking challenge.

During the segment, the fitness instructor started talking about people’s exercise habits and why they tend not to follow through. Most of the time it is because they have to walk alone. She started to share some of the benefits of walking with a buddy, but not before she threw a little shade at Roker.

“And I will say, if you are like a loner like yourself or like I am too on my walks,” Stephanie said before Al cut her off.

“That sounded really sad! ‘If you’re a loner! If you’re a lonely human being, if you have no friends!’ Awwwwww!” Roker replied to her. Stephanie giggled but then replied that she normally walks alone, so it did make her a bit sad.

However, the pair continued the segment and Stephanie began to share information about the Today Facebook group for the walking challenge. By joining the group, walkers can meet other people to join them.

As they continued, Al brought up walking on a treadmill at home. For many people, Roker included, exercising at home can be difficult. Stephanie suggested that people create a calm, relaxing environment to exercise in at home. She even mentioned lighting some candles and turning the area into a “sanctuary.”

To this, Al replied that he normally uses the time on his treadmill to binge-watch television. It seems to be working for him though. In June, he revealed that he lost 45 pounds with just a few small lifestyle changes.

How Al Roker Lost 45+ Pounds

For those who haven’t been following Al’s journey, he celebrated the 20th anniversary of his gastric bypass surgery in March. He picked up an old pair of his jeans and it looked like you could fit at least two of him in them.

After his gastric bypass procedure, Al went on to lose more than 100 pounds. More recently, he’s been focusing on his health again. Like many of us, he put on some weight during the pandemic.

During the walking segment, he revealed that he has lost a significant amount of weight by making small changes recently. “Exercise, and not extreme exercise, improves, I think, your mental health,” Al said. “Combined with a low-carb diet, I’ve lost about 45 pounds.”
