How Did Ethan Cutkosky Snag Role On ‘The Conners’?
After watching last night’s episode of The Conners, one big question fans have is simple: How did Ethan Cutkosky manage to snag that role? Turns out, it was through little effort of his own. In fact, Ethan didn’t even audition for the character. He actually just received a phone call offering him the character and he was happy to do it.

As TvShowsAce previously reported, the Shameless reunion of Emma Kenney and Ethan Cutkosky on last night’s episode was exciting for Gallagher fans. Sadly, it does not appear as if there are any plans for Ethan to be a regular on the show. The door, however, may be open for his return. Either way, fans of Shameless were just excited to see him. The question is: How did he manage to snag that role in the first place?
According to an exclusive from CinemaBlend, Ethan really didn’t do anything special to get the role beyond agreeing to do it. He explained to the outlet:
I literally just got a call and they’re like, ‘Hey, do you want to come on this episode and play a character?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, that’d be awesome.’ It kind of just went from there. And I got on the call with Bruce, and kind of talked a little bit about what the character entailed, and what they were looking for.
He hoped to surprise Emma Kenney
After learning he snagged the role, Ethan Cutkosky made the decision to keep the information close to his chest. This included not telling Emma Kenney. Ethan explained during his interview that he hoped to keep it a secret until he showed up. He wanted to surprise Emma at the moment. Unfortunately, someone spilled the beans and he never got to surprise her.
He explained to the outlet: And from there on, I kind of just like held it in. I wasn’t gonna tell Emma. I was waiting to get on set so I could surprise her, and be like, ‘Hey, you’re here too.’ Somebody ended up spilling it, so she called me like two weeks after, and she’s like, ‘What the hell? You’re coming on the show? Why didn’t you tell me?’
Turns out, that the team behind The Conners largely hails from Chicago and has a deep love for Shameless. Emma revealed that she also didn’t audition for the role in a traditional sense. She explained she was offered the role. She just had to do a screen test to prove she could handle the part.
