Bitter Tyra Banks? ‘DWTS’ Host Allegedly Upset Over New Cohost
Many Dancing With The Stars fans were surprised to learn that Tyra Banks would indeed return for Season 31 this fall. All year long, rumors persisted that the hostess had been fired from the program amid sinking ranks and a major platform switch. However, DWTS hadn’t fired her. They found a cohost for her instead. Season 19 champ Alfonso Ribeiro will join Tyra onstage to host the show this year.
Publically, Tyra Banks took the news well. But behind closed doors, it seems like she might have been a bit bitter about the situation. Keep reading to see what insiders allege happened.
Insiders allege that Tyra Banks wants to run the show on her own
After DWTS Season 30 came to an end, there were some major changes backstage. Executive producer Andrew Llinares was fired and the show moved to Disney+ instead of ABC. The platform shift was a wildly unpopular move in the eyes of fans. Ahead of the Season 31 premiere, DWTS has brought back Conrad Green as an EP. He was with the show when it debuted, so he knows how to run a successful program.
The hosting shakeup is still making headlines. Former host Tom Bergeron applauded the decision. But it seems like it’s not a popular choice with everyone.
Insiders came out of the wood work to speak out against the hostess’s behavior.
“Tyra was basically told that she would have to co-host the show with Alfonso or not host the show at all,” an insider reportedly told RadarOnline. “Tyra tried to host the show solo, and it just didn’t work. She thought her personality and talent would be enough, but viewers didn’t agree. Focus groups showed they missed the chemistry of two hosts working together. Obviously, Tyra wasn’t happy about the decision, but she had no choice, if she refused, she would have been shown the door.”
Alfonso Ribeiro and Tyra Banks worked together on The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air, so they’re not strangers. And insiders add that Alfonso knows what to expect from Tyra onstage.
“She might not want him around, but the good news is everyone else does,” another insider added. “Firing Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews and replacing them with Tyra was a huge mistake. They can’t get Tom and Erin back but bringing back Alfonso might work. If it doesn’t, the show will be canceled.”
Alfonso Ribeiro accepted his new role with pride
If Alfonso Ribeiro suspects there will be backstage drama, he hasn’t said anything yet.
“Dancing With The Stars has been such an important part of my life for so many years, and I am ecstatic to officially re-join this tight-knit family as co-host,” he said in a statement after the official news broke. “Tyra and I have a longstanding friendship that I hope will resonate with all of the fans at home as we kick off this new season on Disney+.”
The Fresh Prince star even uploaded his own video on Instagram confirming that he will join the cast this season. Diehard DWTS fans hope that he can bring some new life to the show.
