Stranger Things Season 4 has recently come to a close and fans are already buzzing about what comes next. For the show’s creators the Duffer Brothers, it seems like Season 5 isn’t the most pressing thing on their minds right now. The announcement came recently that Netflix has brought on the identical twin brothers to do a live-action adaptation series for the popular manga/anime Death Note. This isn’t the first time Netflix has tried an adaptation of the seminal chess game of a series. Can they make it work this time?

This upcoming Death Note live-action series will be the first non-Stranger Things project the Duffer Brothers have done since 2016. For the last 6 years, they have done little more creatively than live and breathe the world of their show. Now they’re attempting to take on an anime that many fans consider untouchable. In 2017, Netflix put out a live-action movie adaptation of the hit mid-00s series. It tanked critically and with fans, and currently sits at 37 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. That film has so much universal hate among Death Note fans that many refuse to even acknowledge its existence.

So it’s safe to say that the bar for American adaptations of this brand are remarkably low. But that doesn’t mean the Duffer Brothers can phone it in. The anime for this show, in contrast to the American remake, has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. It is thought of by many to be the greatest anime of all time. With that kind of praise, there’s almost no way to do a non-controversial adaptation. The Duffer Brothers have a great track record, though. Stranger Things is one of the most successful shows that Netflix has ever seen on its platform. Obviously, they’re hoping that lightning will strike twice and the brothers can redeem their Death Note reputation.

The Duffer Brothers Empire

Overall, the Duffer Brothers have an incredibly short resume at the moment. But it’s one that can give them a lot of access around Hollywood. Stranger Things is not a show to be taken lightly, and it’s no question that the brothers have big plans for when they wrap up the show as to where they’ll take their talents next.

News on both the new Death Note adaptation and Stranger Things Season 5 are slim right now. They’re both in the very earliest stages. But we can assume we’ll be getting more info on them both within the next year, give or take. Also, every episode of the Death Note anime from 2006 is currently streaming on Netflix. As well as the infamous American movie, if you’re so inclined to sit through it.
