Captive Audience is a Hulu documentary that follows Cary Stayner and the bizarre story of his family. Viewers are wondering what happened and whether or not Cary has been executed yet. Keep reading to find out.

Who Is Cary Stayner From ‘Captive Audience?’

Captive Audience tells the story of Cary Stayner. The documentary starts talking about Cary’s early life. As a child, Cary’s brother, Steven Stayner, was abducted. At the time, in 1972, Steven was only seven years old.

Over time, media coverage of the story dwindled until Steven returned home seven years later with another missing boy, Timmy White. The Stayner family made headlines again upon his return. Steven’s story was turned into a miniseries called I Know My First Name Is Steven. The film was eventually nominated for four Emmy Awards, something Steven never got to see. He, unfortunately, died in a motorcycle accident in 1989.

Stayner’s family was cast into the spotlight once again in 1999 when Steven’s brother Cary was arrested for the murder of Joie Ruth Armstrong, 26, in Yosemite, California.

Eventually, Cary confessed to killing Joie as well as three others: Carole Sund, 42; Juli Sund, 15; and Silvina Pelosso, 16. The trial took place in federal court because Stayner killed Armstrong on federal land, a national park.

He attempted to evade the death penalty by pleading guilty to attempted aggravated sexual abuse resulting in death, felony first-degree murder, kidnapping resulting in death, and premeditated first-degree murder. Despite pleading guilty, Cary was sentenced to the death penalty in 2002.

Where Is Cary Stayner Now?

California’s death row has been pushed to a halt by Governor Gavin Newsome. In 2019, he passed an executive moratorium on the death penalty in the state. However, Captive Audience viewers have been wondering whether or not Stayner was executed before the moratorium was in place.

Not surprisingly, Stayner is alive and well on death row in San Quentin. Even though he was sentenced to lethal injection, none of the inmates on death row are expected to meet their fates. At this point in time, they will remain incarcerated until they die.

This is often a hot topic among true crime lovers. While many people agree with the death penalty, others believe taking a life for a life isn’t the answer. Either way, Stayner wasn’t likely to be put to death in the state of California anyway. The state’s Department of Corrections has not put anyone to death in more than 16 years.

All 737 inmates at San Quentin, including Stayner, are technically awaiting their death sentence. It is unlikely they will ever see that day though.
