SPOILERS AHEAD FOR SURVIVOR SEASON 42 EPISODE 2:

Episode 2 of Survivor is officially out there where you stream your favorite CBS shows. The episode continues the already fantastic momentum from Episode 1. Only 2 episodes in, the cast already seems more than able to carry the entire season. There are so many standouts, and we’re getting to see all kinds of interesting relationships forming.

Only one person went home this week, as opposed to the two from last week since there was one unfortunate removal. While early boots are generally pretty easy to forget, that shouldn’t be the case with this week’s episode. Between a tense tribal and an emotional conversation leading up to it, this contestant left a mark.

Season 42, Episode 2

A challenge from Episode 2 of Season 42.

The castaway who got the boot this week is Marya Sherron. Marya is a member of the Taku tribe who didn’t take much of a spotlight in Episode 1. She was mostly in the background to Jackson, who had the main Taku story from the first 3 days. This week, Marya’s story is given much more depth prior to her elimination. And she has a tragic reason for coming to Survivor.

Her brother was the very first American healthcare worker to die of COVID-19 in 2020. She came on the show knowing it was something he would want her to do. He clearly was a very fearless man and that shows in his influence on Marya’s decision to come on Survivor as a mother of multiple children.

Sadly, Marya’s time on the show is fairly short. When Taku lost the immunity challenge, it came down to her or Maryanne for elimination. The rest of the tribe believes Maryanne’s energy is more beneficial moving forward and, thus, Marya is gone. She does get an accolade for being one of the first and only players to use the “shot in the dark” twist. The twist was introduced in Season 41 and only used a single time then. But, in Season 42, it has been used in both episodes by both eliminated contestants. Meaning the twist is still essentially worthless because we’ve still never seen a successful play with it. But still, good on Marya for trying. It would have saved her if she had gotten lucky.

‘Survivor’ 42 Keeps On Keeping On

We’re already down to just 15 players remaining in Survivor Season 42. It’s sad that these last 2 seasons come and go so quickly. But, fewer players also seem to equal more development in the edit this time around. It feels like we get to hear from nearly everyone in each episode. That’s pretty rare for the show, since someone always seems to catch the dreaded “purple edit”. Let’s hope it keeps up like this.

New episodes of Survivor Season 42 are coming out every Wednesday on CBS and Paramount Plus.
