Season 17 Bachelorette moves on after ending engagement to Blake Moynes
In August of 2021, millions of viewers watched as Blake Moynes proposed to Katie Thurston on Season 17 of The Bachelorette. But three months after the episode aired, they broke up. Reportedly, distance was a factor in the split.
After filming the show, Thurston moved from Washington state to San Diego, California. While there, she struck up a friendship with John Hersey, a former contestant on her season.
A month after splitting from Moynes, Katie and John went Instagram official as a couple. In a long Reddit post, Hersey said that their friendship only turned romantic after she split with her former fiance.
However, some fans don’t buy it. In fact, a sweet Valentine’s post to Hersey from Thurston went off the rails after fans called her out for saying it was “love at first sight,” despite sending him home in the second week of the show.
Is their romance on the fast track to an engagement?
Fans perplexed by couple’s social media posts
John Hersey set Instagram ablaze on March 2nd by sharing a series of photos that looked very much like an engagement announcement. In one of the snapshots, he holds Katie in a piggyback position as she kisses his cheek.
However, it was his caption that caused a frenzy among Bachelor Nation fans. “‘HUGE announcement to make in the coming days. It is going to be HISTORIC!!!” -Mike Fleiss.'” The caption is a take on Bachelor creator Mike Fleiss posting on Twitter about a historic announcement.
Katie Thurston shared similar photos on her own Instagram. In one photo, she drapes across Hersey’s lap. “Life is better with you in it,” she wrote in the caption with a heart emoji.

Fans flooded both comment sections with questions about the photos. Was it supposed to be an engagement announcement?

Bachelor Nation fans immediately took the photos as a sign of an engagement. Katie Thurston revealed the truth in the comments on her own post. Seeing the fan frenzy, John Hersey dropped a comment, “Is this an engagement announcement?“
Thurston seemed to shut down the speculation by replying, “I wish.”
So, it seems that Katie Thurston and John Hersey are NOT engaged. At least, not yet. Stay tuned!
ABC has yet to announce the name of the Season 19 Bachelorette lead, but an announcement is expected in the coming months as Clayton Echard’s season of The Bachelor wraps up.
