Less than a month ago, Blake Moynes and Katie Thurston ended their engagement. The couple met on Season 17 of The Bachelorette. After narrowing her choices down to two men, Thurston sent runner-up Justin Glaze home before the final rose ceremony, with her heart set on Blake Moynes being the one for her.
Turns out she was wrong. They broke up 2 months after the proposal aired in August.
Ahead of Thanksgiving, Katie Thurston promised to get messy on Instagram by pairing her former suitors to a Taylor Swift song. Her first dedication went out to Blake with “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” However, she saved the messiest for last.
On the last day of “12 Days of Messy,” Katie Thurston shocked her followers by revealing a new romance with John Hersey. Fans had been speculating about a romance between them, especially after Katie received mysterious flowers following her break-up with Moynes.
Who is John Hersey?
Who is John Hersey? That’s a question he’s been getting a lot lately. While he was a suitor on Season 17 of The Bachelorette, he didn’t make an impression on viewers or Katie Thurston. In fact, he was sent home on week 2 of the dating show.
However, the two formed a friendship, especially after Thurston moved from Washington state to San Diego, California.
With just a few weeks’ lull between her engagement and her new relationship, Bachelor Nation fans are giving the timing some serious side-eye. Even Blake Moynes has said that he suspects “emotional cheating” was going on between his former flame and her new man.
John Hersey defends timing of relationship with Katie Thurston
On Friday, November 26, John Hersey took to Reddit to defend his relationship with Katie Thurston. In a three-page letter, he details his defense against cheating claims and why they didn’t wait longer to announce their romance.
Bachelor Nation fan account @bachelornation.scoop shared screenshots of Hersey’s Reddit post. John Hersey begins by saying the letter will be the “first and likely only time” he addresses the rumors.
According to Hersey, his friendship with Katie began “over the last half year or so.” And friendship is what it was, always. “We were ALWAYS platonic,” he stressed.
“The boundaries of our friendship with respect to her ongoing relationship never even required addressing, because […] You guys- she was engaged.” – John Hersey, Reddit.
He further states that anyone who thinks they cheated is misjudging both his and Katie’s character. “There was no wrongdoing prior to the end of their engagement,” he reiterated.
However, he admits to understanding why people have questions about the timing. In fact, he even agrees that it seems “fast and messy.”
Giving insight into their relationship, the former Bachelorette suitor says their romance was “[built] off of the foundation of a close friendship.”
Why didn’t they wait to go public?
The two knew that the worst part of their new romance was “optics.” He also responded to questions about why they didn’t wait to go public. John Hersey states that they wanted to date out in the open, instead of taking the risk of the tabloids spotting them on secret dates.
While he was defensive of his relationship with Katie Thurston, Hersey was also apologetic to any fans who might have been “emotionally triggered” by the perception of infidelity.
“Cheating in any form is unacceptable, and I’m sorry if it looked as though either of us were taking advantage of anyone’s trust,” he wrote.
His intent in writing the letter was to have an “honest conversation” about what happened. Now that he’s spoken out, he looks forward to going back to receiving “Spongebob memes and ‘John who?’ comments.”
Are fans buying the timing clarification?
How was the statement received? Not very well on the Reddit thread. Several people pointed out the irony of John Hersey posting the statement on the social media platform most despised by his new lady love.
In fact, earlier this month, she tweeted advice for other Bachelor Nation alums to avoid Reddit, calling it “pretty damn toxic.”
