Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker is about to step down as the iconic time traveler. However, she is leaving at a time when ratings have hit a new low. Whittaker has enjoyed mixed success in her version of the character, which could be why things are changing. In fact, she may be denied the iconic scene of regenerating into her successor when her run ends later this year.

The Sun theorizes that the BBC1 team is looking to take a break, or, in fact, a complete reboot of the show. Meanwhile, the New Year’s Day airing of the sci-fi series attracted a mere 3.4 million viewers. This is the series’ lowest-ever rating since 2005. Jodie appeared in the New Year special after the latest season of Doctor Who concluded in December.

There will be two more specials later in 2022 before she officially signs off from the show. If there is a possible reboot of the sci-fi series, this could mean that Jodie, who has been in the role since 2017, may be denied the farewell regeneration scene.

Will the series be rebooted?

The Sun quotes a source as saying, “The new team are considering a range of radical options.” This is in an attempt to revive the “flagging fortunes” of a program adored by millions of people around the world.

It could see a decision to put space between Jodie’s time in the Tardis and that of her successor. The source said that this would effectively mean that Whittaker may not be seen regenerating into the next doctor. In fact, they said she has already wrapped filming on the special episodes for this year and no new Time Lord has yet been revealed.

A similar move was made by showrunner Russell T. Davies when Doctor Who was relaunched in 2005. At that stage, Christopher Eccleston was in the title role and he wasn’t seen to emerge from a regeneration. However, in a much later episode of the show, Eccleston was shown regenerating from the late John Hurt.

According to a report by the Sun, it is possible that David Tennant could return to the role of Doctor Who to replace Jodie Whittaker. He first played the role in 2005 and soon became a fan favorite.

If so, Tennant could make history as the first actor to play the Time Lord in two separate runs.
