Will Amazon Prime Video Adapt More ‘The Wheel Of Time’ Books?
Amazon Prime Video premiered the first three episodes of the fantasy series The Wheel of Time on November 19, 2021. Those episodes almost immediately streamed for more than a billion minutes, taking it to the top of the streaming charts. Since then, the streamer has uploaded the balance of Season 1, with the season finale dropping on Christmas Eve. Meanwhile, Amazon executive Vernon Sanders says he would like to adapt all 15 of Robert Jordan’s best-selling novels that the show is based on.
About The Wheel of Time on Amazon Prime Video
The Wheel of Time is based on the fantasy novel series of the same name by author Robert Jordan. The story follows the adventures of Rand al’Thor and various other characters as they on behalf of the mythical figure The Dragon Reborn. To do so, the characters travel across an expansive world and timeline.
The Wheel of Time consists of 14 novels and one prequel, published between 1990 and 2013. Meanwhile, Season 1 of the Amazon Prime Video series is an adaptation of the first book, The Eye of the World. It should be noted that Robert Jordan passed away in 2007, and the final three novels in the series were completed by Brandon Sanderson. The writer worked from Jordan’s outline and notes to complete the series.
Season 2 is already in the making
The Wheel of Time showrunner, Rafe Judkins, is already working on Season 2 of the series. That season will likely cover the events of the second book, The Great Hunt.
Meanwhile, when speaking with IGN, Amazon Studios’ co-head of TV, Vernon Sanders spoke about his hopes for the future of the series. He said how great the novels are and that he would ultimately like to work with Rafe and his team to adapt the “full thing.” Judkins added that obviously, future seasons are “a ways down the road,” so currently they are focused on the second season of The Wheel of Time.
Full series of The Wheel of Time stories
To adapt the entire series of Jordan’s books would be unprecedented for a streaming series. This is especially so when considering the huge budget they are working with. For instance, the super-popular Game of Thrones only ran for eight seasons. However, the CW fantasy series Supernatural did run for a total of 15 seasons and fans would have loved to see more.
Amazon Prime Video will likely wait to see the success of Season 2 of The Wheel of Time before making any serious plans. To adapt the full series, the showrunners might decide to double up and cover more than one book per season. However, if the audience and money is still there, it could be worthwhile running for 15 seasons.
For those who have yet to watch the series, the trailer for Season 1 of The Wheel of Time is included here.
