People have gathered for decades for the Burning Man festival in the desert. The festival was created in 1986 by Larry Harvey and Jerry James. The event was held in San Francisco, California, in its first year, with fewer than 40 attendees.

The festival, which celebrates community, art, and self-expression, has become a must-attend event. The annual festival moved to the Black Rock Desert in Nevada in 1990. Nearly one million people attend the week-long festival now.

Unlike other popular festivals like Coachella and Stagecoach, Burning Man doesn’t have headlining music performers. All the art is made by the participants. The festival ends in the burning of a large wooden effigy known as “the man.”

The peaceful festival turned gory after a bloody body was found.

Woman Unexpectedly Gives Birth During 2025 Burning Man Festival

The Burning Man festival makes headlines year after year, not for its celebration of art, but for flooded roads, traffic jams, etc. This year, one headline revealed that a woman unexpectedly went into labor during the festival.

Common sense would say not to go to a festival if you’re pregnant and near your due date. But the woman, identified by PEOPLE magazine as Kayla Thompson, had no idea she was pregnant, let alone about to give birth.

“It was absolutely 100% a cryptic pregnancy. No signs, no morning sickness. She wasn’t even showing,” her husband told the news.

The baby girl named Aurora was born a month prematurely. The newborn, just 3 1/2 pounds, was rushed to the hospital. The baby remains in the NICU until she’s strong enough to go home.

Dead Bloody Body Found, Shocking Details

One attendee at Burning Man won’t be going home at all. A body was found on Saturday, August 30, during the main event when the effigy burns.

The unidentified man, described only as a while male, was found in “a pool of blood” by nearby campers. Pershing County Sheriff Jerry Allen said the death appeared to be a secluded event, but encouraged event-goers to use caution.

The cause of death remains under investigation, but multiple outlets reported that the incident is now a murder investigation.

The Burning Man festival continued despite the gruesome discovery. The 2025 festival comes to an end on Monday, September 1. The 2026 event is expected to kick off on Sunday, August 30, and conclude on Monday, September 7.

This isn’t the first time a dead body was discovered at the festival. The flooding in 2023 left people stranded in the desert. One man died after overdosing on drugs and alcohol. Another death in 2024 was caused by an asthma attack. There have also been several deaths related to car accidents and plane crashes since the festival moved to Nevada in 1990.
