Michael Jackson Unreleased Tracks Found, Worth A Fortune
In shocking news, a former California Highway Patrol officer found cassette and DAT tapes containing unreleased Michael Jackson songs in a storage unit. According to reports, the former officer found 12 unreleased songs, which could be worth millions of dollars.
Here is what you need to know about the new music and what could come next.
Michael Jackson Unreleased Songs Found In Storage Unit
Gregg Musgrove, a former California Highway Patrol officer, spends his free time treasure hunting and selling collectibles on eBay. He got a call from a fellow treasure hunter about a storage unit he bought at an auction. Music producer Bryan Loren owned it, and Loren worked with Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, and Sting.
Loren fell behind on payments, and no one could find him. The buyer had no idea what to do with the contents of the storage unit, so he gave them to Musgrove. Among the items in the unit were dozens of boxes of digital audiotapes from the 1980s and 1990s. Because this is old technology, he had to find equipment to play them.
He said it was unreal when he finally realized what he was listening to. “I kept calling my wife in to make sure I wasn’t losing it,” Musgrove said (via The Washington Post). These tapes included 12 unreleased Michael Jackson tracks he recorded before releasing his Dangerous album in 1991.
However, there is also an unfortunate side to this story. Musgrove might be unable to cash in on the tapes, and fans may never hear this music.
The Michael Jackson Tapes Might End Up Buried
Musgrove did what he thought was right. He hired an attorney and presented their findings to Michael Jackson’s estate. However, Jackson’s estate rejected the offer to buy the recordings from him. Not only that, but they said that Musgrove couldn’t do anything with them.
“It should be clear to all that ownership and rights of exploitation to the recordings remain vested in MJJP Records and that nothing commercial or otherwise can be done with the DAT [digital audiotapes] copies,” the Michael Jackson estate said in a statement.
Musgrove can also not do anything about it. Although he may have physical possession of the tapes, he does not own the copyright to the recordings. Sony owns part of the rights to the recordings, and Jackson’s estate holds the other rights—even if they don’t have the physical tapes.
Musgrove can only sell the physical tapes, but he can’t do anything with the music. Both Sony and Jackson’s estate said he couldn’t release it. As a result, Musgrove plans to sell the tapes soon, and he could make millions. Whoever buys them can’t release the music, but it would be a huge boon to a collector who can listen to them in private.
Musgrove said the tapes include the 12 unreleased songs, an hours-long conversation with a producer about ideas, and even a rap duet with LL Cool J.
