In a new interview, Lisa revealed that The View fired Barbara Walters. This is shocking since she was a trailblazer for other female journalists and was the one who came up with the concept of women gathering around and talking about politics on television.
Lisa spoke to The Cut in which she recalled Barbara’s last day in 2014. The producers sent the show into a commercial break as the panel spoke amongst themselves. At the time, Lisa turned to Barbara and asked her if she was “going to be lounging in a hammock in Tahita” after her retirement. Barbara turned to her and said the producers pushed her out of the show.
She also spilled other details about her former co-host. There was a time when Barbara Walters would kick one of her panelists under the table if they said something that could ruin an interview. Barbara wanted to ensure that their guests returned. She also warned them about saying something that could jeopardize future interviews.
Lisa admitted she liked it when the trailblazer kicked her. The CNN correspondent said she “wore it as a badge of pride.” There was also a time when Barbara encouraged her to go on maternity leave. She congratulated Lisa on her pregnancy and shared some words of advice.
“She said, I’ve had miscarriages, and I probably should have paid a little more attention to my personal life,'” Lisa shared. “And she would just look me directly in the eye and say, ‘Darling, just don’t neglect your personal life.'”
Barbara Walters clearly had regrets about her life. Even though she achieved success, she wished she would’ve enjoyed her relationship with her daughter Jackie. It was obvious by that point their relationship was riddled with problems. The panel saw Barbara as a role model and mentor for their respective careers.
The View was part of her legendary career
Barbara Walters was upset about losing her job on The View. She had no idea where that would leave her career. However, she would still go on to interview public figures and celebrities. At the time, Barbara felt she reached a crossroads in her career.
“Barbara’s life was her career,” Deborah Norville told The Cut. “And if her career was coming to a close, what did that say about her life?”
In 2008, Barbara Walters realized that journalism was changing. The media was more focused on true crime and celebrity gossip. That’s when she realized that interviews with political leaders were no longer interesting. What are your thoughts on Lisa Ling spilling the tea on Barbara on The View?
