Is ‘The Sandman’s Future On Netflix At Risk?
Three months after its premiere, Netflix’s The Sandman was finally renewed for another season. However, the show’s future on the streamer could be at stake after a new decision by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav. What is this new decision by the company CEO? How does it affect the fantasy drama series’ future? Keep reading to find out the details!
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO Is Unhappy With Netflix
In the past few months, the new Warner Bros. Discovery merger saw several changes. As the company attempts to take care of its significant debt, new specifics related to its business dealings have surfaced. This includes David’s feelings regarding Netflix. Reportedly, Zaslav isn’t happy with the streaming deals arrangement with Netflix. The streamer serves as the home for several Warner Bros. television shows.

As per reports, Zaslav has instructed his team to temporarily pause selling any finished shows to Netflix. This decision came into effect as the CEO isn’t happy with Netflix’s payment pattern. Traditionally, the producers of these TV shows receive their payment over a duration of 18 to 24 months. This is a policy the streamer has had for several years.
Netflix Is A Long-term Warner Bros. Discovery Client
As per ComicBook, Warner Bros Television is among the big companies that sell shows to the streamer. This includes series such as Sweet Tooth, Manifest, You, The Sandman, and several others that originally aired on The CW. A Warner Bros. Discovery insider detailed the move stating, “It’s an odd way of looking at it. It’s obviously the way the industry works and has worked with Netflix. He’s paid big numbers [by Netflix] and the company has been happy with that. It’s like he suddenly discovered what the payment terms were.”

The Sandman is based on comic series by Neil Gaiman. It is a rich blend of dark fantasy and modern myth. Moreover, the series has contemporary fiction, legend, and historical drama that are interwoven into it seamlessly. The series trails the places and people affected by the Dream King, Morpheus. As he attempts to mend the cosmic and human mistakes made during his vast existence, he deals with several antagonists on his journey.
The Sandman Makers Were Afraid Of The Show’s Cancellation
The series is incredibly expensive. So, fans and makers alike feared that the show would be canceled by the streamer even after incredible ratings.
“This is not a cheap show. It is the opposite of a cheap show. This is dead expensive. And that means that in order to get a renewal confirmation, we have to perform as well as everybody could possibly hope,” Gaiman explained.

However, the show is finally renewed. Yet, it won’t make it to the streamer until Warner Bros. Discovery CEO sorts out the payment arrangement with Netflix.
