The Last Of Us is one of the greatest narrative video games of the last 20 years. Even many people who aren’t so into video games have been made aware of this apocalyptic classic. It makes perfect sense that a game praised for its powerful storytelling would eventually receive some kind of adaptation. Historically, video game adaptations are nothing but duds. From the terrible Super Mario Bros movie in the ’80s all the way up to the multiple recent attempts at Resident Evil on screen. HBO isn’t known for putting out lackluster material, though. So can The Last Of Us break the tradition of bad video game adaptations and become as big a TV hit as it was on consoles?
HBO Meets Playstation
This adaptation has been in the works for some time. HBO has been keeping The Last Of Us fans on the edge of their seats with small occasional updates and new information. Finally, this week, fans got a bombshell with the first poster for the series hitting the internet. It’s an amazing recreation of the box art cover for the Playstation 3 classic. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are looking spot on as the main protagonists Joel and Ellie.
Funnily enough, this isn’t Pascal and Ramsey’s first time in an HBO show together. However, it is the first time they’ll share the screen. Previously, both actors were minor characters in Game Of Thrones. Pascal played the ill-fated Oberyn Martell while Ramsey was the child-noble Lyanna Mormont. They never shared the screen at the time (Or existed simultaneously in the same season, for that matter), but both will share the leading roles in what may be HBO’s newest major title.
The Last Of Us Hits Television
The Last Of Us is a post-apocalyptic zombie story about a man who usually survives better on his own becoming the father figure for a girl with a special ability. Post-apocalyptic zombie stories are a dime-a-dozen, generally. Yet, the game rose above the rest by being so intensely human and personal that it was hard not to get attached. Whether or not the TV show can do the same is yet to be seen. But if anyone can make it happen, it’s probably HBO.
The game has sold 17 million copies since its release. On top of that, it won basically every game of the year award that could be won back in 2013. The sequel, The Last Of Us Part II, was fairly controversial but still sold incredibly well and also received multiple game of the year awards. So there’s certainly a large fanbase wanting to see what HBO has in store with this show.
The Last Of Us hits HBO Max worldwide on January 15th. Will you be watching?
