Are ‘Jeopardy!’ Contestants Allowed On Other Game Shows?
Ever since the Jeopardy! premiered on March 30, 1964, it has become a staple for game show fans. The chance for contestants to showcase their knowledge on a renowned show has attracted several enthusiasts over the years. Only a few get the golden chance to be a Jeopardy! contestant. Plus, there are certain rules one must follow to be a part of the show. One question always on the aspirants’ minds is if they can participate in other game shows following their Jeopardy! stint.
Are there any rules about contestants not participating in other game shows after or before being on Jeopardy!?
Jeopardy! Contestants Have To Follow A Non-Compete Clause
On a Reddit forum, a Jeopardy! fan talked about the very same rules regarding a contestant’s appearance on other game shows.
The OP posted, “What are the rules regarding being on other game shows?”
“Obviously, former J! contestants can appear on other game shows after their initial run, but what are the rules about appearing on one before you’re on Jeopardy? Is there a period of time recommended to wait before you’re allowed to appear or audition?” the OP further added.

“I was curious after seeing the Weakest Link application posted a few days ago- I think it would be fun to be on the show, but if it would hurt my chances of being on J!, I would definitely rethink it,” they concluded.
It is a norm with most game shows that they have a certain time period set in their contract before they can be on another show. Eespecially one with a similar format. This is a part of their non-compete clause.
Have The Participation Rules Changed After Alex Trebek’s Death?
Answering the OP’s question, one Reddit user wrote, “The only rule for a first-time contestant is that they can’t have previously appeared on this iteration of the show. It used to be specifically ‘you cannot have previously appeared on the version of Jeopardy hosted by Alex Trebek’, but I assume they have amended that language since his passing.”
Jeopardy!’s celebrated host, late Alex Trebek, passed away at the age of 80 after a 20-month battle with stage IV pancreatic cancer. Following his death, the show was managed by an array of hosts. However, after a long-time struggle to find the right host, the makers finalized Mayim Bialik and Ken Jennings. So, it is highly possible that the rules for participation in the show might have been modified or changed after Trebek’s passing.

Citing this very change in Jeopardy! rules, the Reddit user added, “For instance, James Holzhauer was on The Chase six years before he appeared on Jeopardy.”
“The only rule afterward is that some contestants will have a non-compete clause that doesn’t allow them to appear in other shows, but that’s only until after their final appearance in a regular show or tournament,” they further explained.
Jeopardy! Host Ken Jennings Has Appeared In Several Game Shows
Just like any other game show, Jeopardy! also has rules put in place to ensure the show’s taping goes on smoothly without any glitches.

For example, the host Ken Jennings has appeared on other game shows that include:
- Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?
- 1 vs. 100
- Grand Slam
- Stump The Master
- Doug Loves Movies
- Who Wants To Be A Millionaire
- The $25,000 Pyramid
- 500 Questions
- @midnight
So, it is clear as day that Jeopardy! contestants can appear on the other game show. However, only after a certain time period, as mentioned in their contract. The exact time period can vary and isn’t clear yet.
