Why Is Netflix US Taking ‘Major Dad’ Off Their Lineup?
American sitcom TV series Major Dad is set to leave Netflix US soon after just streaming for a year on the platform. Created by John G. Stephens and Richard C. Okie, the show started airing on CBS between 1989 & 1993. The series is often an overlooked classic when one talks about sitcoms.
Why Didn’t Major Dad Receive An HD Upgrade On Netflix?
The show’s cast included Matt Mulhern, Beverly Archer, Marisa Ryan, Chelsea Hertford, Jon Cypher, & Nicole Dubuc. Major Dad’s storyline revolves around a U.S. Marine finding his once-sorted life no longer entirely under his control after he marries a journalist and becomes stepdad to her daughters.

As per What’s On Netflix, the show became available on Netflix on September 1, 2021. Ever since, fans have had access to all four seasons comprising 96 episodes in total. The show is available on Netflix in its original 4:3 format. This is why it didn’t receive any high definition upgrades as seen with Seinfeld when it dropped on Hulu and then on Netflix.
For quite some time, Netflix has been losing its classic show collection as distributors end their contracts to power up the content collection on their own streaming platforms. As of now, Netflix is the only streaming platform that carries the show.

However, with the sitcom slated to depart from the platform on September 1, 2022, which platform would pick up on it next?
Will Paramount+ Pick Up Major Dad?
Given that the show first premiered on CBS, it is highly likely that Paramount+ would pick up on it. Another great contender for the same is Peacock which is owned by Comcast/Universal that serves as the distributor. Universal has been licensing several TV series to Netflix for short-term deals. These deals are set for a term of one year. Some good examples of these deals are 30 Rock and Friday Night Lights dropping in on Netflix on a 1-year deal.

There are two reasons Universal is opting for such contracts. First, it gets the distributors short-term money from streaming platforms such as Netflix. Second, they are playing a long-term game. By being available on a popular streaming platform, they get viewers addicted to these shows. This is all in hopes of bringing them onboard their own streaming platforms, which here is Peacock.
Netflix Bids Adieu To Several Popular Classics
Apart from Major Dad, several other popular shows and movies will exit from the platform on September 1, 2022. If you are a fan of classic horrors, A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984 & 2010) is slated to leave Netflix on the given date. Mission: Impossible (1996, 2000, & 2011) is also leaving the platform on the same date.
