It’s a colossal week for Ghostbusters fans. Not only did the announcement of a new movie just come out recently, but there’s even more. An animated series is coming to Netflix. The announcement was made as part of the Netflix Geekd Week. Many announcements and new trailers for popular nerdy franchises have been dropping this week. There’s no trailer for the new Ghostbusters series. But we do have some of the first details of the new show.
A New Animated Ghostbusters
The official announcement came on the Ghostbusters Twitter account yesterday, June 8th.
“We’re not done. We’re back in animated television! Sony Animation is teaming up with Netflix to create the next generation of Ghostbusters. This series will navigate an unexplored era of the Ghostbusters Canon,” reads the official tweet.
There are next-to-no details about the show at this time. One of the only things we do know is that it has Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan as executive producers. Reitman and Kenan are the co-writers of the recent film Ghostbusters: Afterlife. That movie got a good reception from most fans of the franchise. So it’s exciting to many to see these two on board for even more Ghostbusters projects moving forward.
This isn’t the first time there’s been an animation in this franchise. Longtime fans may remember The Real Ghostbusters which ran from 1986 to 1991. It was created by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. Although, all of the classic characters that make a return in the show have different voices. It was highly successful and ran for 7 seasons. There’s no telling if this new show can reach that level of success. But it goes to show how long it’s been since anything like this was done with the franchise. And it shows that it does have the potential for ratings and attention.
More Ghostbusters Than Ever Before
It’s a huge time for fans of the Ghostbusters franchise in general. There has been a legion of new movies in recent years. On top of that, there are even more new films coming up. Plus the addition of the new Netflix series and a prequel series that Dan Aykroyd is apparently working on right now.
There are very few details on the Ghostbusters series for Netflix at the moment. No release date is set, and we don’t even have a teaser to go off of. With so few details, it’s safe to assume the release date for this new show is probably way out in 2024. Hopefully, we’ll get more concrete details in 2023.
