SURVIVOR 41 SPOILERS AHEAD:
Xander Hastings is one of the big 3 from Season 41 of Survivor. He made an impact with his interesting and thoughtful combination of physical, social, and strategic gameplay. Few have balanced the three in quite the way Xander did during his time. So it comes as no surprise to see the fanbase he accumulated throughout the season.
It also comes as no surprise that some of those same fans believe he should have rightfully been the winner of his season over Erika Casupanan. For those fans, the salt on the wound is the fact that Xander didn’t just lose, he was swept away. Erika took nearly all of the votes at the final tribal council and Xander was left with third place after the other final tribalist Deshawn picked up a single vote from jury member Danny McCray. One disgruntled fan decided to attempt to rally Xander supporters on the internet in one last embittered attempt at validation.
Xander’s GoFundMe
A GoFundMe page was started by a fan named Eva Walker called “Show Some Love to Xander SURVIVOR’S Real WINNER”. The description for the page, written by the organizer, stated that Xander’s loss in Season 41 was unfair and asked for Xander fans to show some love and get 100,000 dollars raised to give to the 25-year-old. Survivor used to give away 100k as its “Fan Favorite Award”.
The show did this at every reunion episode from seasons 8 to 26. The show would poll fans and give the top-voted contestant (unless the top-voted ended up winning, in which case they would pick the second top-voted) a $100,000 prize. Past winners of the Fan Favorite Award include beloved players like Ozzy Lusth, James Clement, and Malcolm Freberg.
An Understandable Ending
On December 31st, 2021, the GoFundMe page shut down after not even achieving 10% of its goal. The organizer wrote, “I have tried contacting Xander to no avail. I will be refunding every single one of you”.
Xander has not publicly said anything about the campaign. But clearly is not a fan if he did see it, given that he made no remarks of support. He was always very sympathetic and supportive of his fellow tribemates. His heart-to-heart conversation with Ricard about his unborn child remains one of the greatest conversations of the season. He plead his case at tribal council and was fully in support of Erika upon her receiving the million-dollar prize.
So it comes as no surprise that Xander wouldn’t be a fan of any campaign that sought to de-legitimize his friend’s rightful victory. If anything, the outcome of this campaign and Xander’s continued wholesome relationships with his former castaways makes most Survivor fans love him that much more.
Survivor returns with its 42nd Season in March of 2022.
