Country Music Sensation Reveals One Thing That Made His Career Harder On Him

Jelly Roll turned to music during his time in prison. Once he was released, he was determined to make it big in the music industry. He spent years as a rap artist before switching his sound to country music. It was then that he found major success after his breakthrough hit “Son of a Sinner.”

The singer’s career is booming now. He recently signed on for a huge role with Netflix, but it wasn’t an easy road. During a recent interview with Taste of Country, Jelly Roll revealed what held him back from finding success. The singer hails from Antioch, Tennessee, a neighborhood of Nashville. But his proximity to Music City, U.S.A., didn’t give his career the boost you would think.

He told Taste of Country that being from Nashville actually held him back. “You know what, I think it hurt me for the longest time,” he said. Jelly Roll explained that with so many other aspiring singers in Nashville, he almost fell through the cracks.

Jelly Roll credited the success of Morgan Wallen, Chris Young, Ernest, and others in that time period for his own success. “You get all these guys who are turning into big songwriters and big artists that are all big Tennessee boys, it definitely didn’t hurt to be a part of that,” he said.

“Country is in eras, and I think they were in need of some country that wasn’t, you know, truck driven or huntin’ driven,” Jelly Roll added about how his style differs from traditional country music.

It took a while for Jelly Roll to find his place in the music industry, but now that he’s here, he’s not going anywhere.
