Mariah Carey Wins Big Payout In Court Over Huge Christmas Hit
Mariah Carey is a singer with a career spanning decades. However, the songstress recently found herself, and one of her famous songs, the subject of a legal battle a few years back. Since then, however, the star has had a big victory just ahead of the holiday season.
An Update Was Recently Given About A 2023 Lawsuit Concerning Mariah Carey
Carey started her career in the late 1980s/ She rose to fame with her 1990 namesake debut album. Since then, she has had a prominent career in music, often dubbed the “Songbird Supreme.”
Outside of music, Carey has also appeared in a number of films. In the world of reality television, she has also served as a judge on American Idol.

However, for many, Carey is arguably best known for her 1994 Christmas song, “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” The song has become something of an internet meme over the years over how much play it gets during the holiday season.
However, the song was also recently the subject of a lawsuit. As noted by Complex, Andy Stone and Troy Powers sued Carey back in 2023, claiming her song copied their 1989 song of the same name.
The pair had originally sought $20 million in damages, as well as a trial by jury. According to the outlet, however, the judge felt that the claims lacked merit and “determined there was good reason to stop people from filing baseless lawsuits.”
Since then, Carey was allegedly awarded $92,303.20 in sanctions. An estimated $20,000 was also ordered to be paid to other parties involved with the case.
This Comes Out Just As Carey’s Music Also Recently Hit A Big Milestone
The 2023 lawsuit was said to be similar to a lawsuit Stone and Powers filed the previous year. At the time, they also sued for $20 million, claiming “copyright infringement and unjust enrichment,” but dropped it in November of that year.
Within the court documents, Stone, their “All I Want for Christmas Is You” had “extensive airplay” during the 1993 holiday season. This was around a year before Carey released her song of the same name. Stone previously performed as Vince Vance of Vince Vance and The Valiants and was listed as such in the lawsuit.

Carey’s legal win also comes out just as her song broke another record. According to Billboard, on December 22, Carey hit a milestone of her 100th week at No. 1 on the Hot 100 through a collection of her 19 songs.
This included “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” as well as songs like “Visions of Love” and “Emotions.” The outlet also shared that Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” has peaked at the No. 1 spot on the Hot 100 each holiday season since December 2019.
