Melvin started his career working with various NBC affiliates, even while he was still in high school. In 2011, he joined MSNBC to work as a daytime anchor.

In 2018, Melvin became a weekday news anchor for Today and a host for Today‘s Third Hour. In 2025, he took over for Hoda Kotb after she announced she was stepping down from her role with Today.

However, Melvin has other ventures. This includes his scented candle company, Melvin Made. However, an inside source claims this company has caused issues with NBC. This came out despite the company’s proceeds going to cancer research.

Speaking with The National Enquirer, the source shared, while speaking with “Straight Shuter,” “Tom Brokaw and Matt Lauer would never sell candles. Back in the day, this kind of thing wasn’t just frowned upon at NBC News — it was banned.”

As the outlet noted, sources have claimed for decades that NBC barred news talent from selling personal merchandise. This is reportedly due to concerns that it blurs the line between journalism and lifestyle branding.

Sources noted that these rules have softened over the years. However, sources suggested that Melvin’s company has still sparked issues with the network. Another source reportedly told the outlet, “It feels like the show has shifted from journalism to influencer culture.”

Earlier this month, Melvin announced his candle business on social media. In a post on Facebook, he shared, “Today, I’m proud to finally introduce Melvin Made candles.”

“These aren’t just candles. They’re pieces of my story. Each fragrance is inspired by moments and people who have shaped my life, from the strength of family roots to lessons learned through loss.”

“My hope is that they bring you the same light, warmth, and connection they brought me while creating them. Every purchase helps support the fight against cancer. Smell memories. Ignite hope.”

Melvin continues to explore various ventures throughout his career. Back in June, it was previously reported that Melvin would also work on a column for Southern Living Magazine.
