‘Today’ Is Craig Melvin Out At NBC?

Fans have recently noticed that Craig Melvin been absent from recent episodes of Today and is going to be absent from upcoming episodes. Co-anchor Savannah Guthrie has recently explained what’s been going on, including who is filling in for Melvin. Notably, this also comes out after Guthrie recently welcomed a previous co-host to the show.
Craig Melvin Recently Took Over For Hoda Kotb Following Her Departure From Today
Melvin is known for his work with NBC News and MSNBC. Notably, over the years, he’s had various positions with Today.
Notably, back in January, Melvin would take over for Hoda Kotb following her departure from Today. Since then, he has co-anchored alongside Savannah Guthrie.
As previously reported, Melvin had also been absent earlier this month from his usual place due to being on assignment in Miami. At the time, Melvin was aboard a cruise ship for a special edition of Today. At the time, Willie Geist, known for Sunday Today with Willie Geist, filled in for him.
Prior to this, Melvin was previously subject to rumors that he would be leaving Today after he was also absent for a brief period. However, he was simply on assignment while co-hosting the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympic Games.
During the April 10 episode, Guthrie announced Melvin would also be absent during upcoming episodes of the show. She also revealed who would be filling in for him for the time being.
It was explained that Melvin isn’t taking a permanent break from the series. He is simply taking time off for the Easter holiday.
Melvin will be spending time with his wife, Lindsay Czarniak, and their children. However, while Melvin is expected to return to Today, it’s unclear just when he will be back on the show at this time.
Craig Melvin Even Made A Joke About His Replacement
For the time being, Melvin’s replacement in the interim has already been announced. As shared in a clip on Instagram, Guthrie shared, “And by the way, we’ve got some special news! After Mike gets his fill of golf, all next week he’s going to join us right here in Studio 1A. Craig’s going on Easter break with his kids. [Mike] Tirico, you are going to fill in and co-host!”
When asked if he was excited, Tirico shard, “I was so excited about it. And then I just watched Jon Hamm’s live audition. And now I’m out. I can’t do this. But no, Melvin showed he can host the Olympics when I was traveling back and forth. So figure we can try to go for an even trade here. I’m looking forward to being with y’all next week. Guthrie herself noted, “It’s awesome! It’s all in the family!”

As the post was captioned, “We’ve got some special news! While Craig is out next Easter Week to spend time with his kids, the one and only Mike Tirico will step in to co-host. ‘This is … literally the only job in television Mike Tirico has not done,’ Craig joked during the announcement. See you soon, Mike!”
For his part, as noted by his “even trade” comment, Tirico is primarily known as a sportscaster and work with various sports media. Arguably, he is best known for announcing NBC Sunday Night Football.
