Former HGTV Stars Faced Backlash For New Show
It’s hard to imagine anyone hating on Joanna and Chip Gaines. The wholesome couple won fans over with their HGTV show Fixer Upper. They eventually left the channel behind but not their house-flipping careers. The beloved couple created their own network in 2021.
Fixer Upper: Welcome Home was among the shows on the new network. But it was their Back to the Frontier series in 2025 that caused major backlash. The show followed three families as they lived like homesteaders from the 1880s. One of the families was a gay couple, Jason Hanna and Joe Riggs, along with their 10-year-old twin sons.
The decision to include a gay couple angered a lot of people who felt that, as Christians, Chip and Joanna Gaines went against their faith. Their most outspoken critic was Franklin Graham, the son of famed evangelist Billy Graham.
Franklin Graham called the couple out in a social media post. “Promoting something that God defines as sin is in itself sin,” he wrote on Twitter.
In a rare move for a celebrity, Chip Gaines responded to the criticism and defended including the gay couple on the show. “It’s a sad Sunday when ‘non believers’ have never been confronted with hate or vitriol until they are introduced to a modern American Christian,” he tweeted.
His public response reportedly didn’t sit well with his wife.

Joanna and Chip Gaines have been married for decades and have five children together. But they are reportedly having marriage problems after the backlash over Back to the Frontier. The couple put on happy faces for appearance on Shark Tank earlier this month, but trouble is brewing.

A source told Radar Online that Chip’s response to Franklin Graham caused tension in his marriage. “It’s not that she is less tolerant than Chip, but she questioned his wisdom and business sense,” the insider said.
“There were some cracks in their marriage before this, but the scandal has opened those weak points and brought it all to a head,” the source added.
Previously Spoke About ‘Challenges’ In Marriage
The couple were on the Stronger with Don Saladino podcast earlier this summer. They opened up about juggling their marriage and careers. “We’ve had our challenges,” Chris Gaines said.
The insider told Radar Online that they were surprised the couple were still together. “Sometimes, I think it’s a miracle, given all of that, that they’ve lasted this long.”
