Rachael Ray Reveals Hiding Her Life’s Struggle From Mom
Rachael Ray recently shared a video with fans in tribute to her mother Elsa on Mother’s Day. With her story, the star also shared the impact her mother had on her. In addition, Ray touched on her own personal struggles that ended up influencing her career. This also isn’t the first time Ray talked about her mother during the holidays.
Rachael Ray Talked About Life As A Young Woman On Her Own In New York
Fans know Ray as a celebrity cook and television personality. For many, she is known for hosting The Rachael Ray Show, also known simply as Rachael Ray, from 2006 to 2023.
Previously, Ray was known for hosting a variety of Food Network shows. This includes 30 Minute Meals and $40 a Day. In recent years, she became known for hosting various FYI cooking shows.

Recently, Ray shared a video with fans to help celebrate Mother’s Day. She then shared a story about her own mother, Elsa. As she noted in the caption, “My mom taught me a lot more than how to cook. She showed me how to make something outta nothing. And how to do it with love.”
“Whether it was dinner on the table or how to pick yourself up when things got tough… she just had it. Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms, mother figures, and caretakers out there—this one’s for you.”
Ray elaborated on this in the accompanying video, noting personal struggles she endured as a young woman. She shared, “When I lived in New York as a very young woman, I was very poor.”
“But I didn’t want to bother my mother. I didn’t want her to feel scared for me. So I would never ask for money. And I didn’t have any.”
“Eventually, I did a show called ‘$40 A Day.’ And that was my budget for a whole week. I would buy a week’s food and I only had $40.”
This Wasn’t The First Time Ray Talked About Her Mother During The Holidays
According to Ray, she shared she “always felt so grateful that I came from people that taught me how to buy dry beans, a few vegetables, very little protein, and to live on that for a long time.”
“And I am deeply grateful for it. It has changed the course of my life. It’s made my life what it is. And that’s what I try and share in these shows as often as I can.”

This isn’t the first time Ray had shared a post honoring her mother, even for the holidays. In fact, Ray even used the same photo as a screenshot for the post. For one International Women’s Day, Ray shared a post, writing, “My mom, Elsa Providenzia Scuderi, is ‘no baloney.’ She’s tough, smart, and to me, oh so COOL.”
“She’s my favorite cook and favorite person. She’s the hardest worker I have ever known and although one of the toughest humans, she’s also the most empathetic and compassionate. Among the long list of things to love and admire about Elsa, are her gratitude and positive mindset.”
