Gayle King recently took part in Blue Origin’s eleventh space flight, serving as part of an all-female crew. However, the journalist, and the trip, has received criticism since its original announcement. King herself recently spoke out about these criticisms.

The Blue Origin Flight Lasted Only For A Few Minutes

King is best known for her work as a broadcast journalist for CBS News. In particular, she is a co-host for CBS Mornings, having previously co-hosted CBS This Morning.

However, King recently took on a new role when she joined up to take part in a space flight with Blue Origin boasting an all-women crew. King joined up with figures like with pop star Katy Perry and fellow journalist Lauren Sánchez. The crew also included film producer Kerianne Flynn, bioastronautics research scientist Amanda Nguyen, and rocket scientist Aisha Bowe.

The flight took place on Monday, lasting around eleven minutes. Through the brief trip, King and Sánchez also became the first female journalists to travel in space.

However, as previously reported, the trip has been met with criticism since its announcement. Many at the time criticized the move as frivolous, saying that these figures should be more invested in volunteer work if they want to help the world.

This past Tuesday, King addressed these critics on CBS Mornings. She shared, “Space is not an either or, it’s a ‘both.’ And because you do something in space doesn’t mean you’re taking anything away from Earth. And what you’re doing in space is trying to make things better here on Earth.”

Gayle King Previously Discussed The Criticism On The Day Of The Flight

The host tried to explain that the bigger picture that the flight is part of. She added, “What Blue Origin wants to do is take the waste here and figure out a way to put it in space to make our planet cleaner. Jeff Bezos has so many ideas, and the people that are working there are really devoted and dedicated to making our planet a better place. That’s number one.”

King also assured, “There was nothing frivolous about what we do.” She added, “So, you know, I’m very disappointed and very saddened by it [the criticism]. And I also say this — what it’s doing to inspire other women and young girls? Please don’t ignore that.”

“I’ve had so many women and young girls reach out to me, and men too, by the way. Men too that say, ‘Wow, I never thought I could do that, but I see you doing it at this stage of your life.'”

This isn’t the first time King has spoken out about the criticism. The day prior, she spoke with People, saying, “Anybody that’s criticizing it doesn’t really understand what is happening here.”
