As noted by Blue Origin’s website, a few celebrities are expected to serve as part of Jeff Bezo’s latest rocket mission. King will be among six women involved. In addition to King, others joining her include singer Katy Perry, journalist Lauren Sánchez, NASA scientist Aisha Bowe, research scientist Amanda Nguyen, and movie producer Kerianne Flynn.

King Share Her Feelings In The Instagram Video

In the Instagram video, King opened up by saying, “I’m so afraid but I am also so excited about it.” She continued, “When they asked me, they asked me around Thanksgiving, I was like, ‘no, no, no.’ Then I started thinking about it, and I just thought, ‘What a unique opportunity.‘”

“And, yesterday, I met the crew. We’re now the crew. We’re all on a text chain together. And their stories are so amazing.”

King continued, “This was never my dream. It was never my dream and somebody said, ‘Maybe you need to have new dreams, Gayle.'” She also shared she didn’t “know how to explain being terrified and exited at the same time. It’s like how I felt about [delivering] a baby.”

Many Fans Disliked The Idea, Even Asking King To Back Out

As the CBS video shared in the caption, “‘I’m so afraid, but I’m also so excited’: @gayleking is about to blast off as part of the crew for Blue Origin’s next flight to the boundary of space. The historic flight, comprised of all women, is expected to launch this spring.” That said, an exact date of the launch has not been announced.

However, many comments on the Instagram video were not too happy for King. As many comments noted, some fans disliked her working with Bezos. Others suggested there were plenty of issues down on Earth, making a trip in space unnecessary.

A few even shared concern that King should back out of the mission while she still can. That said, a few comments supported King’s decision. Some comments included:

  • “I have a great idea! Why don’t you go do some volunteer work instead of this ridiculous and dangerous publicity stunt. I’m tired of children being hungry in this country.”
  • “Unfortunately I don’t agree with space travel! While children are hungry on this planet.”
  • “WTF Gayle?! We’re all out here boycotting Amazon + Whole Foods + WaPo and you’re getting ready to get on this man’s rocket ship and go to space?! Please do not fall for this gimmick to put six women into space cause down here on Earth they’re putting us in boxes.”
  • “I don’t think you *need* to go. Like this isn’t a thing that has to happen no one will be mad if you stay on Earth.”
  • “We listen and we don’t judge BUT I see we haven’t learned our lesson from the submarine debacle….”
