Carrie Underwood Talks Awkward Moment With Ryan Seacrest
Carrie Underwood has had a long history with American Idol, going from a winning contestant to one of the show’s own judges. However, Underwood hasn’t forgotten her past or her early days on the show. Recently, Underwood opened up about an infamous moment she had with series host Ryan Seacrest.
Carrie Underwood Admitted The Early American Idol Moment ‘Haunted’ Her For Years
With American Idol‘s Season 23, Carrie Underwood has joined the other judging panel alongside Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie. However, she was once just a hopeful contestant, at least until she became the winner of the fourth season.
On a recent clip shared on social media, Carrie Underwood recently looked back at a moment during her early days on American Idol. Noticeably, this moment involved an encounter with series presenter Ryan Seacrest.
Notably, the Instagram post was shared by both Underwood herself and American Idol‘s page. On the post, the caption read, “Who remembers this?! We all have our head in the clouds at some point!” In the accompanying clip, Underwood and Seacrest were seen having a conversation outside on a Los Angeles sidewalk. As Seacrest noted, “A lot of people take photos of the sidewalk, the stars, the sign.” Underwood shared, “Not Me!”
The American Idol host mused, “You take pictures of the trees, Any of the stars? Have you seen stars?” Underwood assumed Seacrest meant the literal stars in the sky, noting, “I mean, it’s been pretty cloudy.” This caused Seacrest to clarify, “No, I mean celebrities.”
At the time, Underwood laughed it off, saying “Oh… OK, no. Just you!” In the Instagram video, Underwood admitted she hadn’t forgotten the moment. As Underwood shared, “This moment has haunted me, literally, for 20 years. People still bring it up.”
Ryan Seacrest Also Looked Back At The Moment In The Comments
Underwood added that, with a conversation about nature, talking about the heavenly bodies was a natural progression. She shared, “It just was what it was. We were talking about buildings and palm trees and things that were outside, and then all of a sudden he threw me a curveball and is talking about celebrities. My brain was still in outdoor mode.”
For his part, Seacrest himself also had a sense of humor about the situation. In the comments, he wrote, “Common mistake to confuse me with an actual star.” The American Idol Instagram page also noted, “Just you, @ryanseacrest!,” complete with a heart and star emoji.

Taking to the comments, American Idol fans also shared their reactions to the clip. A few came to her defense, noting they would have thought the same thing. Some comments included:
