‘Beyond The Gates’ Maurice Johnson Talks Series Exit

Soap operas are no strangers to recasting or characters leaving the series. Beyond the Gates might have just come out this past February, but is not breaking the tradition, with Maurice Johnson leaving the daytime drama. In fact, the actor himself has already discussed the series exit.

The New Dr. Ted Richardson Has Been Announced Following Maurice Johnson’s Exit

Beyond the Gates is a recent CBS daytime drama that revolves around the affluent African American Dupree family. Notably, it serves as one of the first daytime soaps to premiere on a major American network since 1999’s Passions.

Actor Maurice Johnson had joined the cast as Dr. Ted Richardson, a prominent plastic surgeon and Nicole Dupree Richardson’s husband. However, despite the show only being on the air for about a month, it’s been announced that he will be leaving the series.

Keith D. Robinson will take on the role following Johnson’s exit. This notably serves as the series’ first recast.

Robinson may also be known to audiences through shows like Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue, American Dreams, A Million Little Things, and Monk. It’s believed episodes of Beyond the Gates featuring him as Dr. Richardson will come out by May.

At this time, as noted by Michael Fairman TV, no specific reason has been given for the recent casting change. However, the publication noted there had been speculation on any initial cast changes since the series’ premiere, as is often the case for new shows.

That said, many fans were upset to learn about the change, at least on Johnson’s behalf. Notably, this comes out as Ted’s life is about to change thanks to his ex, Leslie. An upcoming scheme will involve Leslie’s alleged daughter Eva working for Nicole and winning over Ted, who may actually be Eva’s father.

For his part, Johnson discussed his exit from the series on social media. Taking to X, he wrote, “Sorry #BeyondTheGates fans. You’ll have about 30+ more episodes to see if Dr. Ted ever goes shirtless.”

Johnson continued that there still was more to come from him, at least for the time being, all the while thanking fans for their concern. He noted, “I’ll be back on your screen on Thursday! Thanks for the love and blowing the internet up over the weekend about ya boy!”

Tying into the caption, Johnson also shared a shirtless photo of himself, as well as one in him in a white suit. One hashtag, “#AnnouncementSoon,” also hinted he’d soon have news for fans.

On Johnson’s post, many fans mused other projects he could join following the show. This included other soaps. Some comments included:

  • “Come back u were amazing. Maurice what if GH called?”
  • “I love Keith, but they should have kept you and brought him on as your brother.”
  • “Nope still not enough! Lemme talk to a manager.”
  • “I didn’t see you in the opening credits today and I’m even more pissed! No offense to the other guy but you will always be Ted to me. Your character had chemistry with everyone you interacted with. I’m very disappointed with BTG. I’m going to miss you!”
