Antiques Roadshow often shares unique items and even better stories. This episode and its guests were no exception. This guest’s story was an almost century-old tale about his grandfather.

A Century-Old Tale Of Heroism

The guest shared how his grandfather had earned a Carnegie Hero Medal in 1930. His grandfather earned his medal for extreme heroism. The man saved a baby that had fallen into a well. Leila Dunbar, of Antiques Roadshow, listened as the medal’s owner recounted the story in surprising detail.

The guest shared more about the medal “In 1927, he was driving down the road in northern Iowa and he happened to see a bunch of people standing in a field for some reason.”

Thankfully the Antiques Roadshow’s guest’s grandfather had looked and seen the crowd and let his curiosity get the better of him. Because of this, he saved an infant. The guest went on to talk more about the situation. “He went over; he had found out that a baby had fallen down a well.” The infant had fallen 10-15 feet down the well and was resting on a ledge, no one else was willing to descend down the well, which was collapsing, to save the child. By the time the man had gotten there, the child had already slipped and fallen another 30 feet down the well. Now nearing the water.

The End Of A Nail-Biting Account

The guest’s grandfather descended 40-50 feet down into the collapsing well to retrieve the infant. He got to the child. Edward Malloy tied a rope around himself, and the child. The pair were raised to safety. “Grandpa said that the most scared he was, was down at the bottom of that well because it was caving in.” Sharing more of Edward’s account of the situation “Looking at the hole up there, he said it was the size of a quarter. They finally pulled him out and the baby was saved.”

How The Carnegie Hero Medal Came To The Hero

According to the story in Antiques Roadshow, later on, the mother, Mrs. Velma, learned of the Carnegie Hero Medal. When Mrs. Velma learned of the award she nominated Edward Malloy. Edward Malloy was presented the award of the Carnegie Hero Medal. Malloy was also presented with a $1,000 cashier’s check. The last thing the guest shared was that his grandfather shared his account when he took it to the bank. “I remember him saying when he got the check, he took it to the bank to deposit it and all the tellers passed it around, they’d never seen a check that big before.”
