S.W.A.T. Gets Whiplash

As S.W.A.T. gears up for the release of its eighth season premiere, the show’s producer Shawn Ryan has been discussing whether they will return for a ninth season. So far, CBS has not marketed that this will be the last season of the series. Ryan said in an interview “It’s been called the final season the last three or four seasons, hasn’t it?” At points in the past, the last two seasons were accused of being the final ones.

S.W.A.T. has survived being canceled by CBS not once but twice. The series was canceled by CBS once in 2023 and again in 2024. In 2023 CBS went back just days later after the announcements and uncanceled the show announcing that season 7 would be the finale. In a surprise move, CBS announced in 2024 that S.W.A.T. had been picked back up and renewed for the 8th season.

Nobody Knows The Plan

S.W.A.T. executive producer Ryan also said that they “also understand that a corporate change is happening in that world. I know David Ellison, I wrote a movie for him back in the day.”  Ellison’s company Skydance is supposed to be acquiring CBS’ parent company Paramount Global. He went on to explain how things will change and it is all up in the air. “I don’t know what criteria for renewal is going to be. It seems like it could be much different than years past.” Many of the renewal decisions will not be expected until the Skydance deal closes mid-spring of this year.

S.W.A.T. Has Pride

Ryan went on to share that he was uncertain if the circumstances of filming this season with an outside studio would affect their chances of returning for another season of S.W.A.T. He said, “I think economics are going to play big into things, so it’s all uncertain.” Ryan went on to share that the cast and production team of S.W.A.T. are “going to continue to make the best show we can,” later continuing with, “We are really proud of the legacy of that show.”

Currently, S.W.A.T. is produced by Sony Pictures Television who has been credited with getting the show renewed. They have claimed to have offered CBS offers they “couldn’t refuse”.
