‘CBS Mornings’ Gayle King Gets Hit With Violation Accusations

There was a hugely controversial interview on CBS Mornings. Producers of the show apologized and admonished Tony Dokoupil for his line of questioning. However, while people are debating what Dokoupil did, more people have focused attention on Gayle King, with one person saying she violated “journalistic standards” before the interview.

Here is what happened and the accusations against Gayle.

CBS Mornings Interview With Ta-Nehisi Coates Breaks Down

Ta-Nehisi Coates appeared on CBS Mornings to discuss his new book, The Message. This book has three sections and follows Coates as he traveled to Africa, South Carolina, and Palestine. In each stop, he writes about what he sees there and delivers first-hand accounts of the people involved in various racial discord.

Nate Burleson introduced the interview and the first question was about how Ta-Nehisi Coates feels his book is good for writers to read. He explains that writers, especially those who write about real-world events, should have the first goal of saving the world.

However, before Gayle King could get in her first question, Tony Dokoupil began to ask questions. However, Dokoupil moved away from the typical morning show fluff questions and immediately accused the author of having a political agenda by only telling one side of the story in Palestine.

Coates said that everyone in America has heard one side of this story, but he wants to tell the story of people whose stories don’t get told. There are humans on both sides, and many of them have nothing to do with the politics of the war.

“Is it because you just don’t believe that Israel in any condition has a right to exist?” Dokoupil, who is Jewish, asked. It was clearly a blindside “gotcha” styled interview from him, and he dominated the entire segment with the pointed questions.

Adrienne Roark, the president of editorial and newsgathering, and Wendy McMahon, president of CBS News and Stations, said that Dokoupil’s questions did not meet the network’s “editorial standards” (via Deadline). However, this was not the final word.

Paramount Chair Shari Redstone defended the interview and said he was a “model” of “civil discourse.” She finished by saying, “Tony did a great job with that interview.”

Gayle King Accused Of Violating Journalistic Standards

In what might be a way to deflect attention from Dokoupil, there are now people within the studio who attacked Gayle King for the interview. The interesting thing is that Gayle only got a chance to ask one question, even though she had prepared more. Dokoupil wouldn’t allow Burleson or King to speak almost at all.

Coates later appeared on the Trevor Noah podcast, What Now? They spoke about the interview, and Coates said that he felt that Dokoupil was guilty of “commandeering” the interview. However, he had nothing but good things to say about Gayle.

“Gayle came behind the stage before we went [on] and she had gone through the book, and I’m not saying she agreed with the book,” Coates said. “[King] was like, ‘I’m gonna ask you about this. I’m gonna ask you about that.'”

This brought about controversy. A former CBS journalist claims that “If she was showing him specific lines of questioning in advance, that would violate journalistic standards” (via The Free Press.).

That is debatable. The other idea is the “gotcha” interview style of Dokoupil. Gayle was wanting to talk about the book, and there is nothing against journalistic standards that doesn’t allow an interviewer and subject to discuss the conversation ahead of the interview. Many publicists ask for the questions before even allowing a subject to appear for an interview.

CBS defended Gayle King after these accusations. “Gayle King is one of the most respected journalists in America. She is known for her thorough preparation and note-taking,” a CBS Mornings spokesperson said in a statement. “She reads the books, consumes the content that will be discussed and extensively prepares for each interview on CBS Mornings. Engaging in pre-segment conversations with guests is standard practice for any experienced host” (via Daily Beast).

  1. I haven’t read the book, but if it presents only one side, the Palestinian viewpoint, then the interviewer should have asked the tough questions. However, the interviewer should have allowed his questions to be answered and not monopolized the interview. Why wasn’t Gayle allowed to ask her questions? There are two sides to the Palestine/Isreal conflict. Both sides have had regrettable losses and both sides have committed atrocities. Everyone should be demanding peace and an end to the war. Being pro one side or the other doesn’t help anyone. Pro-peace is the answer.

  2. I like Gayle King. she’s a very professional person. she wasn’t even given a chance to get her questions, in edgewise. she shouldn’t be punished for what Tony did.

    1. I have never been a fan of Gayle King. in fact, I am not a fan if any of the current morning hosts abd stopped watching CBS ymseveral years ago. I am tired of hearing how many Palestinians have been killed. many of them were tied to Hamas, but no news shows states this fact. one of the prisoners that Israel released was a young, 17 yrs old, who went out the next day and killed Hewish children. No one reported this. He was part of Hamas. Israel did not start this war. For thousands of years, the world has been trying to remove all Jewish people and Israel from the face of the world.

      1. I am a world member. Neither I or my family and friends have ever tried to remove Israel or the Jewish people. Your statement is grossly misleading.

      2. UNfortunately, Sandy we see what Israel does every day on tv now for over a year. They are very good at killing people and not picky about who they kill. I have seen plenty of pictures and videos of wounded and dead children, including one boy who kept birds and he was killed along with his birds, his mom, and 23 relatives. That’s an entire generation of one family. Read up on Tantura, the village files, Deir Yassin, King David Hotel bombing These atrocities were carried out by Zionist terrorists. It’s shocking that only 3 years after the Holocaust in 1948 Zionist militants started the ethnic cleansing of Palestine. It’s easy to blame the world. It helps to avoid introspection and taking responsibility for the behavior of your people.

        1. I thought it was good for interviewers to ask non-fluff question. I saw the interview & was glad someone did ask Coates tough questions for a very tough book. All of the interviews I’ve seen have treated him with kid gloves & he has no X account to respond to.

    2. Tony should be punished severely for lack of professionalism and prejudicial attitude prevention him from exercising protocol for questioning a guest and undue disregard for his peers!
CBS will m/should suffer dearly when trying to book other guests.
And why would Gail be the scapegoat here? Perhaps Coats doesn’t have to leave the country as his point was made by Tony’s treatment — CBS AS GUILTT TO ALLOW IT!

    3. I agree 100% with Pat, Pro-Peace is truly the answer..and until there is a two state solution..there will never be peace. I trust the will of GOD no matter what..God is in control 🙏 and I will wait for his will to be done.(Prayers help.

  3. I’m not the biggest fan of Gayle King but clearly here she’s being thrown under the Bus, it’s clear that they want to put the blame on her for something she didn’t do

  4. I saw the segment and I was glad the Tony asked the questions. It showed that the author was extremely biased against Israel and was not just reporting what he called facts. I was glad Tony pushed for the truth.
I also don’t feel that Gayle did anything wrong.

  5. I enjoy watching Gayle, snd Tony but Nate is a joke. He needs to take Jeff Gore place on Saturday morning that Michelle Miller ran off with her attitude.

  6. Much ado about nothing. However, what I think is the biggest violation is 60 minutes. Lesley Stahl interview with Trump and Kamala’s recent interview was a disgrace. Perhaps time for a reset or recategorize the show under entertainment. Real journalism is dead.

  7. Tony was hostile and rude to Coates.his hostility was obvious in his voice and body language. I use to like Tony–but during that interview he showed me who he really is, and I believe him.

  8. Focusing on Gayle and “what she did” while not seeing the extent Tony went to get his point of view across is called white privilege

  9. Tony Dokoupil was rude and unprofessional. these Jewish thinks they can do and say whatever they want without consequences. never give the man time to answer his questions or even give Gayle time to ask the man some questions. Tony needs to be suspended.

  10. Can’t stand Gayle. She’s too bossy. She’ll ask a question, and before that person has a chance to answer, she interrupts with another question. It’s time she leaves. She even does it to Tony and Nate. The guys are great. Time for her and Oprah to have their own show. She really thinks she’s the big shot, NOT.

  11. You would think Jews would be the last people to promote genicide. But that is exactly what Israel is doing to the Gaza Palestinians and the Lebanese. Tens of thousands of innocent civilians (mostly women and children) have been slaughtered by the Israeli military. These are WAR CRIMES!!

  12. Tony did a good job. Coates was a little naive not to expect some hard questions to be ask; considering the subject matter. Now Coates is trying to garner sympathy via other media outlets . Whining because he felt mistreated. Cry me a river.

  13. My question to the world .Why does Israel have 2 sets of law. One for the Jewish people and another set for non- Jewish? Please explain. Inquiring minds want to know. Tony did not give his fellow journalists a chance to ask their questions. I would have like to hear about the other places the author visited and wrote about. Now I will buy the book.

  14. education is the ability to listen to almost anything without losing your temper or yourself confidence Robert Frost. if I said something anything or wrote a book does my views make me anti-Semitic
