‘Jeopardy!’ Contestant Hits Bad Luck After 3-Game Win Streak
While puzzle designer David Erb was on his Jeopardy! winning streak, he gained many fans. David Erb had won three games in a row and looked like a serious threat. He was seeking enough wins to guarantee his place in the Tournament of Champions. However, that didn’t happen when he had a “bad luck” loss that disappointed fans.
Here is what happened and what fans had to say about the loss.
David Erb Loses On Jeopardy! After Three-Game Winning Streak
David Erb, a puzzle designer from Seattle, was on a three-game winning streak and was looking to win his fourth game. However, his luck ran out on Jeopardy! in his fourth appearance on the game show. He ended up losing to Maddie Carwile, and many fans left that episode upset.
In Thursday night’s game, David took on Maddie, a healthcare program coordinator, and Alex, an attorney. Despite his strong first three games, he started down early, heading into Double Jeopardy! in third place.
By the time that Final Jeopardy! rolled around, David was still in last place with $4,400 compared to Maddie at $13,900 and Alex at $16,000. The final clue was “A 1927 N.Y. Times headline: ‘Witness testifies’ this woman ‘rewrote play and insisted on the spicy scenes because city liked them.’”
No one got it right (it was “Who is Mae West?”). Maddie bet small and won the game with a final tally of $11,700, while David finished second with $4,277.
Fans Lament David’s Jeopardy! Loss
Fans were disappointed that David Erb went home after just three wins. Many felt that he did great, but some commented on his age and how tiring multiple appearances can be. Others wanted him to get an exception and return for the Tournament of Champions.
Here are some comments from the Reddit thread about the episode:
- “David had an impressive run. We hope to see him again later this season in the TOC.”
- “David was a great player, ran into a couple of other great players and a little bad luck.”
- “I’m hoping he gets an exception to join, bcos he’s pretty good. Racked up $30k 3 games after DJ! but it’s a shame his 4th didn’t go his way.”
- “He is scary smart, but he’s 74 years old. It catches up to you.”
Making the Tournament of Champions is not guaranteed until a person hits five wins. So far, there are only a few locked into the next tournament. They include: Adrianna Harmeyer (15 wins), Isaac Hirsch (9 wins), Drew Basile (7 wins), Alison Betts (5 wins), and Amy Hummel (5 wins).
Lisa Ann Walter also qualified after winning Celebrity Jeopardy! Season 2.
