Former NFL Star Bashes Tom Brady, Cites Conflict Of Interest
Tom Brady finally started his career as an NFL announcer. His first game to commentate was Sunday when the Dallas Cowboys played the Cleveland Browns. After the first week, one radio personality called Brady “an embarrassment,” and former NFL star Tiki Barber agreed.
However, Tiki went a little further in his complaints and explained why he felt Brady was as bad as he was.
Tiki Barber Says Tom Brady Has A Conflict Of Interest
When Tom Brady retired from the NFL after a record-setting career, he quickly made his next move. He signed a 10-year, $375 million contract with Fox to work as a football commentator. However, he asked for a one-year vacation after he retired before starting the new job. Brady finally started this year.
However, after his first game as an announcer, critics came out in full force. “I think he’s awful,” said Evan Roberts of The Evan and Tiki Show. “I think he’s an embarrassment to the profession. I think he’s that bad. He’s terrible” (via Us Weekly).
He joined sports analysts like Dan Patrick and Colin Cowherd, who also thought he didn’t do a very good job.
Former New York Giants star Tiki Barber agreed. However, he had an explanation for what might have gone wrong. Tom Brady became a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders after he signed his Fox deal. As a minority owner, Brady cannot enter other teams’ facilities or participate in production meetings with team staff because it is a conflict of interest.
These meetings are something all broadcasters do to prepare for game day.
“I don’t know how he does this without talking to anybody,” Barber said. “You get a feel of who these guys are and what’s important… You just know, you feel it. and he can’t get any of that.”
Tom Brady Should Improve As Season Wears On
However, some analysts feel that Tom Brady could improve. To do so, he has to find a good balance. While Tiki Barber feels Brady didn’t have the prep he needed to succeed, Brandon Contes of Awful Announcing said that he thought Brady was “over-prepared.”

With that said, over or under-prepared, Dan Patrick said that Brady sounded nervous and “choppy.” The long-time journalist said, “Listening to him, and I’ll try to be fair, maybe he’ll be better in four or five weeks. He says obvious things; he also has a weird voice. I hate to pick on weird voices…but I don’t know. It was very tough to listen to.”
In Week 2, Tom Brady sticks with the Dallas Cowboys and will call their game against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday at 1 p.m. EST.
