ABC Cancels New Series From ‘Modern Family’ Star Ty Burrell
ABC canceled a new series with Modern Family star Ty Burrell before it even started. The reasoning given was that the material was “too dark” for a sitcom. More so, the network claimed the subject matter presented difficult challenges for the network and decided to pass on the project.
Here is what you need to know about the sitcom that was canceled before it ever had a chance to get started.
New Sitcom By Monder Family Star Canceled
Ty Burrell signed on for the ABC sitcom Forgive & Forget as both the star and executive producer. The show was supposed to focus on a man named Hank, played by Ty, who received an Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis.
Hank would then reconnect with his adult son Ben to make new memories together. Writer Eugine Garcia-Cross created the series based on his own experiences in dealing with a parent with Alzheimer’s. Eugine hoped his show could help “destigmatize a disease afflicting millions” using comedy.
Modern Family co-creator Christopher Lloyd was brought in to consult on the project along with Burrell. However, ABC felt the subject of a lead character with Alzheimer’s would be a hard sell, possibly proving Eugine’s idea that it needs to be destigmatized.
There were also casting problems. After the first table read-through for the pilot, the show realized it needed a new actor to play Ben.
Modern Family Cast Slowly Moving On Since Show’s Cancelation
While ABC dropped Forgive & Forget before it had a chance to see success, ABC claims it has plans for the former Modern Family star. The network has other options in development and the company is considering what might be a good fit for Burrell (via The U.S. Sun).
Ty Burrell has also voiced the character Jack in the animated series Duncanville. Of the remaining cast members, Sofia Vergara has the best post-Modern Family career. Other than her judging duties on America’s Got Talent, Sofia also starred in the Netflix mafia movie Griselda, based on the real-life mafia leader. She also voiced a character in Despicable Me 4.
Sarah Hyland hasn’t done much since her time on Modern Family. She starred in the sequel Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin in 2022 and hosted the US spinoff of Love Island. Ariel Winter left Hollywood completely, although she does have a voice role in Star Trek: Lower Decks.
Ed O’Neill took a much-deserved break but returned recently for the Hulu biopic Clipped, where he plays the disgraced former Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Silver.
Fans can see Jesse Tyler Ferguson in the 2023 movie Cocaine Bear and Julie Bowen in the Adam Sandler Netflix movie Hubie Halloween. Eric Stonestreet hosted Domino Masters and then took a role as Mad Santa in The Santa Clauses.
