‘NCIS: Hawaii’ Season 4 Would Have Focused On Jane Tennant’s Dark Spy Past
When CBS shockingly canceled NCIS: Hawaii, fans missed out on some important stories being told. Recently, the trio of co-showrunners, Jan Nash, Christopher Silber, and Matt Bosack, spoke about the stories they planned for Season 4. There is no surprise, based on the unresolved cliffhanger, that this season would have focused on Vanessa Lachey’s character Jane Tennant.
Here is what they had to say.
NCIS: Hawaii Season 4 Would Have Focused On Jane Tennant’s Spy Past
Many viewers wanted to know what would have happened in NCIS: Hawaii after the Season 3 cliffhanger. Speaking to TV Line, the co-showrunners shared a key storyline they wanted to explore in Season 4.
While not fully fleshed out, we had a general idea of where the Maggie story was going. It would have eventually intersected with Jane Tennant’s mother, but it was also going to move back into the dark world of Tennant’s spy past.”
This all ties in with the cliffhanger. When Maggie Shaw (Julie White) was waiting for Jane at her home, Jane’s former mentor said, “You’re probably going to need a drink for what’s coming next.” It seemed obvious that Maggie was going to tell Jane about her mother. That story was foreshadowed when Jane was injured and she was dreaming of her mother who had abandoned her.
Thanks to the CBS cancellation, viewers will never get to learn about this intriguing backstory.

Vanessa Lachey Put Herself Into Role Of Jane Tennant
In mid-April, NCIS: Hawaii star Vanessa Lachey shared on Instagram a People feature about her portrayal as Jane Tennant. She wrote, “‘Lachey made history’…this took my breath away this morning. Mahalo to CBS & Paramount for believing in me and this ground breaking show. Here’s to all the incredible People along the way who continue to make it happen” I love my job!!! 🤙🏽❤️💪🏽”
Her husband Nick Lachey responded, “No one will ever know how much of yourself you’ve given to Jane Tennant. No one will ever understand how much this has become part of you. I am so incredibly proud of you babe. You’re a bad*** on camera and off!!”
However, less than two weeks later, Lachey and everyone involved with the series were blindsided that CBS canceled NCIS: Hawaii.

Addition Of LL Cool J Would Continue Jane Tennant’s NCIS: Hawaii Journey
The NCIS: Hawaii showrunners also discussed the addition of Sam Hanna, LL Cool J’s fantastic character. The trio of showrunners, Jan Nash, Christopher Silber, and Matt Bosack, also shared their plans for Sam Hanna. That included some of Jane Tennant’s storyline.
Firstly, the co-showrunners shared that the studio/network “pitched” the idea of bringing Sam Hanna into the series. They admitted that they were “fully onboard.” They loved the character, as well as the man playing him.
However, when the NCIS: Los Angeles alum was first announced, it was in a recurring capacity. But, that changed because of his chemistry with Vanessa. “The chemistry he shared with our amazing lead, Vanessa Lachey, was so compelling, we had hoped to keep it going for many seasons to come.”
It certainly would have been interesting to see how Sam Hanna could have helped Jane Tennant push forward from her situation with Maggie Shaw, as well as her mother. But, CBS decided to cancel this series before these important stories could be told.
