Rico Priem, 66, died on Saturday, May 11. He was a beloved crew member on the set of the ABC drama series 9-1-1.
Priem worked as a grip on the set of the show. After a 14-hour overnight shift, he was involved in an accident on the highway. The accident occurred in Pomona, California.
California Highway Patrol officials reported that Priem was driving a Toyota Highlander and was headed north on the 57 Freeway. At Via Verde Drive, his vehicle left the tarmac and “went up an embankment, and flipped onto its roof.”
The studio, 20th Television, released a statement to People. “On behalf of the studio and everyone at 9-1-1, we send our sincere and deepest condolences to Rico Priem’s family and friends,” the official statement read.
The International Alliance Of Theatrical Stage Employees’ Statement
An online statement was released by the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees. Rico Priem was a member of the IATSE Local 80.
“We are fully committed to the safety and the well-being of all our members and express our heartfelt condolences to the member’s family,” the statement read. “Workers have a reasonable expectation that they can get to work and come home safely. No one should be put in unsafe circumstances while trying to earn a living.”
IATSE president Matthew D. Loeb continued, “Everyone in the IA family is shocked and deeply saddened by this tragic loss.”
“We are working to support our member’s family, their fellow members and colleagues. Safety in all aspects of the work our members do is our highest priority and we will assist in any investigation in any way that we can,” the statement concluded.
A fellow grip and IATSE Local 80 member spoke out about Rico Priem’s death in a social media post. Nina Moskol shared that she recently worked with the 9-1-1 crew member.
She shared that he “was on the cusp of retirement, with his paperwork filed. He had his already rich life planned for retirement, including spending time with his wife, watching his grand-nephew grow, riding his beloved Harley, and even gripping still to stay connected to his friends. He was so jazzed about what he had learned about retiring, he wanted to teach the ins and outs of retirement at the local.”
In addition to his work on 9-1-1, Rico Priem had a number of impressive credits on his resume. He worked on projects such as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Star Trek, Christmas With the Kranks, S.W.A.T., The Company You Keep, and Ghost World.
