SyFy To Cancel Popular Series, Can It Find A New Home?

SyFy has fans angry with the news that they might be canceling a popular and beloved series. However, there are some hopes that another network might pick it up as the show’s producers are looking for a new home. Here is what you need to know about this possible SyFy change.

SyFy Considering Dropping Popular Show From Schedule

The SyFy Network has often faced criticism for canceling shows before they finish their storylines. This is happening again with one of the cable network’s more popular sci-fi series. The series in question is Resident Alien, and there is reason to believe that Season 3 will be the final one that airs on SyFy.

Resident Alien stars Alan Tudyk as an alien with an unpronounceable birth name who has crash-landed in Patience, Colorado, killed Dr. Harry Vanderspeigle, and assumed his identity. His orders are to destroy the human race, but as he starts to meet more humans, he decides that he would rather live among them than destroy them.

However, soon the alien race that sent him decides to come and finish the job, and Harry decides to stand up for Earth and help defend them from extraterrestrial threats. Resident Alien’s first season premiered in 2021 with 10 episodes. In 2022, a two-part release saw 16 more episodes, and the third season just ended on April 3 with eight more episodes.

While the first season started with about a million viewers an episode, the third season dropped to an average of 500,000 viewers an episode, likely why SyFy chose to pull the plug on the series. While there has been no talk from Tudyk about his show, he did respond to a comment on Threads about renewing the show with a fun comment.

Resident Alien Could Change Networks

While SyFy seems ready to end Resident Alien after three seasons, the producers want to move the show to another network or streaming service. Deadline reports that the show could move to USA Network from SyFy. This would be an easy move since NBCU owns SyFy and USA Network.

There are no scripted originals on USA Network right now other than Chucky (and WWE programming, which is also technically scripted programming). This would be the only chance for Resident Alien because the NBCU UCP division produces the science fiction television show. Resident Alien is based on the comic books by Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse.

There is bad news, though. If Resident Alien Season 4 moves to USA Network, it will have to get a budget cut of as much as $500,000 an episode. With the alien special effects, this could be a tough sell. However, while viewership numbers have dropped, it remains one of SyFy’s better-reviewed shows (its first two seasons averaged 97% on Rotten Tomatoes).
