Mistakes happen to everyone and they do happen on television. However, with a show like Jeopardy!, the answers are right there in front of host Ken Jennings. Therefore, he should not have any problems when someone gives the wrong response to a clue. Unfortunately, he is not perfect and recently, he made an on-air mistake. He has done things in the past that viewers did not care for. Contestants have written their answers out in chicken scratch and somehow, it is right. That was not the case this time around.

Alison Betts keeps having this happen to her where a clue or answer goes awry and fans are starting to feel for her. She was the player who had a visual clue of a bird but they showed the wrong bird with which the clue was associated. Now, according to The Sun, she was in the middle of an answer mix up. The clue was:

“A bust of the brawl-loving Renaissance goldsmith Benvenuto Cellini graces the Ponte Vecchio in this city.”

Along with that was an Italian monument in a town square. Alison answered: “What is Venice?” to which Ken said she was in fact correct. Only she was wrong and he had to jump quickly to tell her that just as she was selecting the next category. “I’m sorry, that’s not correct–that’s not correct!” As it turned out, Alison’s fellow contestant, had the right answer with “Florence.”

During the Inside Jeopardy! podcast, EP Michael Davies and producer, Sarah Foss chatted all about this. Sarah said this:

“Now something happened in this game that fans were very surprised about. And that is Ken made a mistake.”

She went onto note that Ken Jennings realized his snafu so quickly that no one had to intervene.

Ken’s Confidence

The biggest problem with this Jeopardy! moment, as Sarah Foss noted was that Ken Jennings says things with such conviction. Therefore, they all believed that what Alison Betts had said was correct. Then, when they realized she was wrong, that left them all screaming. Luckily, Ken hardly makes a mistake so that is one benefit. Alison Betts will be back after a five-game winning streak for the Tournament of Champions and hopefully, it goes much smoother.

Are you shocked that Ken made a mistake like this and production almost went along with it? Let us know in the comments below and watch Jeopardy! weeknights on ABC.

  1. In reference to Jepardy: So what…. Ken Jennings made a mistake. He did right by correcting himself immediately. We are all only human and we make mistakes. God didn’t make us to be “Perfect”. The producers need to put themselves in Ken’s shoes. what would they do if this happens to them? The same thing Ken did. The producers need to chill out and let Ken be.

    1. I agree. Ken Jennings is a perfect replacement for Alex Trebeck. Just let Ken do his job and make mistakes like all of us do. Remember the big mistake Steve Harvey made? No problem there either..

    2. I so agree — Ken is a great host and he immediately corrected himself. He’s human, for God’s sake! I think he’s doing a great job! Producers: You’re OVER-reacting! You should apologize to Ken. Not everyone could do that job and FEWER could do it as well as Ken! Alex himself has said how difficult it is, so back off!

    3. Completely agree. Come on people. Easy to sit at home and judge, but very difficult to do his job. Ken is amazing. Give the guy a break. Or get robots. Seriously. Chill the blank out. Or challenge Ken to a trivia match.

    4. I agree. one thing I want to comment on is that I believe Ken Jennings is the perfect host for Jeopardy. I am awed by him being able to pronounce all those words correctly without even a breath. He is so intelligent. Being host of Jeopardy is perfect for him. Everyone needs to give him a break on A mistakes he may did he may make.

  2. Ken Jennings is a great host. He corrected himself immediately. He’s kind, gentle and has done a wonderful job of filling Alex’s shoes.

    1. Ken does an excellent job as the host of Jeopardy. After all, not only a qualified host, also a great champion of the game.

  3. This a tempest in a teapot. The response of the producers surprises and disappoints me. As for the angry viewers they need to get a life. It sounds as if they watch just to catch up Ken. He’s doing an admirable job. He’s not Alex; he’s his own man. Vive la difference!

  4. I think Ken Jennings is a great host and is a HUMAN BEING!!! How many of us make mistakes and never catch them? He’s smart, fun and successful so let him be HUMAN too!!!

  5. Ken should be fired. I have a thread of 3 emails from him (not some robot or AI or assistant) where he personally attacked me with comments of vulgarity. If anyone cares…like the producers…I can be reached at…[email protected]
