If you missed the huge news, popular cop drama S.W.A.T. isn’t ending this year after all. CBS changed course again and renewed the Shemar Moore-led show for a Season 8 and possibly more. Keep reading for what we know so far about the shocking decision and to see the cast’s reaction to the news.

CBS Reverses S.W.A.T. Cancellation Again

CBS recently revealed May season finale dates for a handful of shows. That included the series finale of S.W.A.T., scheduled for May 17. The police drama was axed in 2023 but the outcry from star Shemar Moore and fans led the network to renew it for one final season.

Just weeks before the show was set to make its swan song, CBS changed their minds yet again. After major pushing from The Young & The Restless alum, S.W.A.T. will be back again for Season 8 and possibly more seasons. The announcement didn’t come with the caveat that Season 8 will be the final season.

Fans have already seen major upheaval on the fictional Los Angeles S.W.A.T. team. Jim Street (Alex Russell) transferred to the Long Beach division. In a nail-biting cliffhanger, Dominique Luca (Kenny Johnson) was shot three times trying to stop a robbery.

The character survived, but ultimately retired after a devastating injury. Deacon Kay (Jay Harrington) put his own retirement plans on hold after Luca’s shooting. One character fans have seen less of in Season 7 and possibly beyond is Donovan Rocker. The actor who portrays Rocker, Lou Ferrigno Jr., is involved in a meaty storyline on rival network ABC’s 9-1-1.

So, S.W.A.T. has been saved but Season 8 might look very different.

Shemar Moore Reacts To News

One thing we do know about the future of S.W.A.T. is that series lead Shemar Moore isn’t going anywhere, sorry Y&R fans! He’s been a mainstay on the show since it debuted in 2017. He’s also an Executive Producer for the series.

The actor has been encouraging fans to stay positive about a possible renewal, even as the season finale drew closer. CBS released a statement about the renewal. “Here at CBS, we always ‘stay liquid’ and love a good dramatic twist, especially when it leads to an eighth season of S.W.A.T.,” but how did Shemar Moore and the rest of the cast react?

Not surprisingly, they were happily surprised by the news. Shemar Moore took to Instagram to share a video of his cast-mates reacting to the news. He captioned the clip, “SWAT FAM!!!!!! The dream continues all because of YOU the FANS!!!!,”

The fan-favorite actor continued his special shout-out to the viewers, “We love y’all and wouldn’t be here without your continued love and support!!!”
