Country music star Sara Evans once joined the cast of Dancing With The Stars all the way back in 2006 for Season 3. But ultimately, she didn’t find much success on the show.

She teamed up with pro dancer Tony Dovolani and ultimately withdrew, placing sixth out of 11 couples. Many fans felt sorely disappointed, believing that Sara and Tony had the potential to bring home the Mirrorball Trophy.

But what many viewers didn’t realize was that Sara Evans and her now ex-husband were having martial issues. After all these years, the singer is discussing her time on the show and the impact at home. Keep reading to see what she had to say.

Sara Evans’ Marriage Problems Pushed Her To Drop Out

Like many other celebrities, country singer Sara Evans opted to launch her own podcast, Diving in Deep. In a recent episode, she opened up about her painful split from Craig Schelske.

Sadly, a lot of the issues started bubbling up after Sara already agreed to join Dancing With The Stars. The stress and pressure of juggling the competition and her marital problems proved to be too much.

“I was killing myself. It was so exhausting,” the 53-year-old singer shared on her podcast. “It was one of the hardest times in my life.”

Sara Evans went on to say that she knew her marriage was in jeopardy, but she didn’t want to end things. They tried marriage counseling for a while, but ultimately didn’t work out.

“He wanted to be at every episode and come down here and be seen on TV, on camera,” the singer shared in her podcast episode. “Also at the same time, he was trying to make a case against me to show that I was working and not being a good mom.”

“I would be on Dancing With The Stars, and you could see some of the episodes, my eyes were just blood red swollen because I’d been crying the whole day, missing my kids,” she continued. However, she also added that it was a fun and memorable experience, even though he personal life wasn’t in great shape at the time.

The Singer Worried For Her Family’s Safety

Sara Evans alleged her ex-husband exhibited very poor behavior, which frightened her and her children.

“The behavior was so bad, and I just realized I don’t want to raise these children with him, with this. I’m not going to say why, but there were very good reasons why,” Sara continued. She touched on an incident at a restaurant that pushed her to her limits. Although she didn’t offer specific details, the singer admitted she knew she had to file for divorce as soon as possible. Sadly, that also meant quitting DWTS.

“I had to quit Dancing With The Stars because the next day we were going to start the group dance rehearsals and because of the trauma that my children went through at the restaurant … [I had to] explain that my kids were traumatized and I’m not leaving them for five seconds, and so I have to quit the show,” she said.

In the end, she filed in October 2006. Us Weekly cites “infidelity, verbal and emotional abuse” as Sara’s reasons for filing for divorce. She also apparently accused him of watching pornography in their home. Craig Schelske denied the accusations.

After a year, the couple finalized their divorce and had a joint custody arrangement for their three children.
