Who Will Play Gibbs In ‘NCIS: Origins’?
Although the upcoming Mothership prequel spinoff NCIS: Origins has fans curious about the story, very little has been revealed since CBS made this major announcement in early January. This prequel series will be about the early days of the NCIS team, following a younger Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Unfortunately, that means Mark Harmon will not be reprising this role. However, he will be narrating.
However, the network has just recently announced who is portraying the younger Gibbs. Here is the latest news.
Who Is Playing Leroy Jethro Gibbs On The Upcoming Prequel Spinoff NCIS: Origins?
In January, CBS announced their first NCIS prequel spinoff called Origins. This new military procedural takes place in 1991 when Leroy Jethro Gibbs worked at the NIS Camp Pendleton office. However, Mark Harmon is not reprising his role, nor is his son Sean Harmon, who has previously portrayed a younger Gibbs in previous episodes. Therefore, who will portray him?
According to Deadline, Austin Stowell is portraying younger Gibbs. Stowell, who is known for the Catch-22 series, is the first actor to be cast in this series. CBS has not announced any other cast members including the actor will be portraying Mike Franks, one of the most iconic characters in this universe.
This series will feature a gritty, late 30-something Gibbs. Per television lore, Gibbs served in the first Gulf War. Now, he s going to take his military experience under the tutelage of Mike Franks. Viewers should expect to see Gibbs being nicknamed “Probie” by his mentor.
More than that, viewers should expect to see how Leroy Jethro Gibbs was molded into the kind of agent who is respected for their reputation. This is also an era where information is not obtained instantly. There is no Google or readily available databases to help expedite an urgent case.

Where Will NCIS: Origins Air?
Already, NCIS fans are confused as to where this new prequel spinoff will air. The recently announced Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo untitled spinoff featuring the long-awaited Tony and Ziva reunion will premiere on Paramount+. This European branch of the Mothership will not be airing on CBS. What about Origins?
The new NCIS: Origins will be premiering and airing on CBS. All shows airing on CBS wind up available to stream on Paramount+. Therefore, anyone who has cut the cord can watch this spinoff, and the entire NCIS catalog on the streaming service.
Lastly, the premiere will be sometime in the 2024-2025 season. This is most likely in the fall.
